But my eyes are on: Sohma Naomi. She's sweet, but she's so shy around guys that it's kinda hard to talk with her . . .

Mmmm . . . well, I guess you could call me your run-of-the-mill teenage "nice guy". Or dweeb, depending on how nasty you want to be. Generally, I'm an overall easy-going kinda guy. I'm not shy, but I'm not the kind of person to jump on a newcomer and freak them out with chatter and stuff. I try not to let most things stress me out too much (though my baking is another matter . . .), but I don't let things go right over my head without a second thought. The middle-man, the average Joe, really. Sorta go with the flow and just be passively friendly to everyone philosophy. Am I making any sense?

My mom likes to tease me by saying that the phrase "you are what you eat" definitely applies to me, because of all the sugar I use and eat in my baking. Some of the girls who're nicer to me tell me that I'm a sweet guy, and my guy friends tell me I'm a pushover. I do my best to be kind to others, try to be helpful where I can. I tend to do or say some really dumb things in order to crack jokes, so people call me a dork too.

I try not to leave bad impressions on people; I figure, if people don't dislike you, then they aren't as likely to try and get you for something, yknow? A lot of times I try to keep the peace, and play Switzerland in a lot of disputes, so people tend to see me as weak-willed and wishy-washy. And since baking and desserts and sweet stuff is considered "feminine", I tend to take the brunt of a lot of bullying. They don't ever hurt me or anything, at least, not physically, so I try to not think of it as bullying. Not the best way to deal with situations, I know, but well . . . it could be worse, right?

I might be a dweeb, but I do have lines that I draw. If you're gonna hurt or insult my friends or family, you'd better think twice. I might not be the strongest person around, or know any fighting skills, but I'll still do my darn hardest to make you pay.

Where do I start . . . ? Hmmm . . . from the beginning, I guess. I was born and raised here in this city, in my family with my mom, my dad, and my older sister. Ever since I was small I had been influenced by the bakery that my family had owned for generations, so I basically grew up on homemade bread and baked goods. Understandably, I also developed a love for baking and kitchen work early in life. When I was old enough my parents let me help out around the kitchen to help prepare merchandise for the store. Other than that I was just a regular kid. Went to school, made friends, hung out with them, the occasional sibling conflict with my sister.

Things started changing once I hit the middle years of elementary. By then we'd started defining what was a "boy" thing to do and what was a "girl" thing to do, and since baking and cooking were "girl" things . . . well, you know how kids are like. They were merciless about it, calling me a sissy and a girly boy and all that jazz. My sister intervened on several occasions, but I think that just made it worse, since they started throwing in things like "hiding behind a girl" and weakling. My love for my family's livelihood was stronger, so one day I got fed up and just declared, "I'm gonna be the greatest baker in the world!" And that was how I started my dream of becoming a pâtissier.

The bullying didn't stop, and continued on into late elementary. My sister was the one who thought of a brilliant plan to stop it once and for all, and on the last day of elementary, during the farewell party, I marched in with a ginormous batch of homemade chocolate chip cookies that, with the supervision of my parents, I made myself. The entire batch was cleaned out, and least to say, the jeers stopped and I entered junior high in relative peace.

I really must be bullybait, but that's not surprising with my passions and personality, right? The taunting of being a sissy started up again when people realized I enjoyed helping around the bakery, and got a little worse when they realized that I was a pushover. I became a gofer for a long while, until one day someone caught them and stood up for me: Sohma Kennosuke. We became friends shortly after that, and from then on no one dared to take their bullying too far.

It was around this time that my family wanted to go through some renovations on the shop. My sister knew of my love for making sweets and desserts, and suggested that the expansion be used to turn the bakery into a sit-in cafe. Before we still served drinks and we had a couple tables, but it wasn't anything to brag about. Ken and his sister Suzuran seconded the motion, and when I brought it up to my parents and told them of my dream, they agreed to it. And so Sakuraba Bakery turned into a cafe as well.

There's not much to say after that. The opening went off without a hitch - the neighbourhood had always liked our bakery, and now that we served desserts and had a cafe feel, we were attracting school-age customers too. We got a ton of publicity since Ken's such a big hit in the mainstream world, and I when I was old enough I started working in the cafe as a waiter on top of my pâtissier duties.

Almost forgot to mention: I'm studying to become a pâtissier. A lot of the dessert and sweets selection that we serve at our bakery cafe is from successful dishes that I cooked up and made public. We're pretty popular after school and around the neighbourhood . . . so drop by some time, yeah?
