A kiss of spring was all it took
to entice her sisters from their buds.
A string of blossoms woke from winter slumber,
pale petals spread wide, faces aimed towards the sun,

all but one.

Nestled safe in her bud, she saw her sisters shiver in winter's reprise,
watched the ice pile on their petals until they could bear no more.
Withered and defeated, they slumped over on themselves,
victims of the killing frost.

But she was stronger than her sisters.
Where they had fallen, she emerged
into the cold with open arms,
and even as the frost froze upon her cheeks,
she raised her head to the light.
