Since man first looked at the stars it has captivated their imagination and hearts.As man progressed his dream to play among the stars became a reality. In 1961 man first launched into space, in 1969 man walked on the moon and in 2101 the first successful colony on Mars was founded. 
Since that time and with the improvements in interstellar travel there have been a great many more planets terraformed and colonized. Humans once wondered if there was life on other planets. As it turned out the answer to that question was a resounding yes, however not as they had thought. There were flora and fauna of many sorts but no 'intelligent' life, or at least no trace of any has been discovered.
among the terraformed planets was Anderasavi, originally thought to be a rich source of yttrium and neodymium. It was any xeno-biologists dream, a planet had yet to be found with denser foliage or more diverse fauna. The Space Research Coalition sent a full research party to Anderasavi. The planet had already been colonized ten years ago for mining operations looking for Yttrium necessary for superconductors, and other scientific instruments.
Unfortunately the veins turned out to only small veins not the deep deposits that had found on the planet Verenti but that was in another quadrant. The neodymium deposits had been richer and they had delved miles deep into the planets surface, it was here they tapped into a series of underground caverns. The caverns held more biological wonders than the surface for the microbiologists several of the caverns had variant creatures adapted to the lightless environs. It seemed this planet had no end to things which could be studied.
Samples having been taken the SRC withdrew to their labs and cycled them through their machines. DNA mapping and analysis begin the most prominent of them. It was here that a true miracle was found. there was a form of fungi a spore. With the most marvelous method of self defense that was nearly unprecedented. The spores of this fungi could infest a host and seemingly turn it into a carrier that desired noting more than to get the parasitic spore to as far a reach as possible. Whats more all infected hosts ignored all instincts of self-preservation and any social order of their species. Whats more the infection caused the hosts metabolism to skyrocket causing it to look for any source of food.....
The SRC's xeno-biology division had been working on the samples from the caves beneath the neodymium mines for months. The SRC put this research as the most important of the planets scientific goals. The SRC tried to be careful tried to be safe, but no laboratory is perfect errors always occur some more serious than others. This one happened to be serious, deadly so!
In the mid-summer of the year 2550 all the plans went to ashes, along with the world. A sample case of the xenoform fungus was scheduled for destruction but instead was placed with the used science vessels for cleaning. The sample was left out and people who were not wearing the protective gear, were exposed. Like so many other virus and contagions it had a longer gestation period in humans than was thought. By the time the breach in protocol was discovered it was too late and those lab workers had mixed into the general population. In three weeks time the city was over run, the hospitals could not cope and the various colonizing powers that be turned a blind eye telling the people they could not afford to come to their aid. However it was not beyond them to take the most valuable of the scientists and government officials from the planet in the earliest of days. The rest of the colonists were left to attempt to survive on their own.

It has been a year and a half since the neodymium spore had ravaged the planet of Anderasavi. The few great cities were in ashes and the survivors were in small groups. Many survivor groups will gather in old buildings and try to make a fortress of them against not just the horde but the bandits as well. The infection had brought out the best and worst in those who survived the initial infection. An anthropologist would love to study a society fall and how the survivors tried to remain alive. But, no more researches would be sent to the now quarantined planet. From scientific marvel to wandering nomads in a wasteland. The ones who seemed to thrive were, the parasites of the human population. The lack of order allowed criminals to unite and form gangs, they started first as looters when the infection started, but they have since moved on and evolved now they are raiders. anywhere a few survivors gather like vultures.
