Can somebody please tell me what's the difference between nee-chan and onee-chan?

im pretty sure nee-chan is just sister and onee-chan is big sister. but i could be wrong.

I'm not an expert, but this is what I think:
As soon as you put 'o' in front of something it becomes more polite. Now oneechan is still not very polite, because you still have 'chan' at the end. Oneesan would be more polite of course. And the most polite would be oneesama.
