Lan did not often like to wander around Halloween alone. Most days, she had a minipet. Other days she would walk perhaps with another of her clan. On occasion with those not from her clan. Yet rarely, rarely did she venture from the sanctuary alone. And if she did, she usually had a task in mind, or was meeting someone. Today she’d been shopping. For what, she hoped, would be gifts. Acceptable ones. Ones that her friends might like. Enjoy even.

She still didn’t know what gift to get her cousin. He made her feel like those darn minipet traders did what with their lots listed only as ‘Impress Me’. He was a hard pony to shop for, the heir.

Not that it seemed to matter. As Lan opened her eyes, she didn’t feel like she had her purchases in hand any longer. He felt something she would not normally hand in hand. A stick. As she opened her eyes, she looked at it. What in the ancestor’s names was she doing with a stick of all things and- Stiffening, she looked at her hands. Black nails were gone, replaced with normal ones. Ones she never had before. And from there?

It just got worse. Her clothes were not her own. They were drab, dull and nothing what she might normally even be caught dead in. Had someone drugged her to pull some horrible joke on her? If so, it was in exceedingly poor taste. Hands went up and- She screamed.

She was missing her horns.

She had, like always, been dozing away in a tree. It was a habit Jay had failed to shake from her War isle days. Even if she wasn’t settled comfortably in a tree house like before, the sensation of knowing she was high up in a tree like old times was enough to set her at ease. The bluejay’s head rested against the tree trunk while her bandaged hands were neatly folded in her lap. Her chest rose and fell slowly while she kept her wings curled around herself. She could have spent most of the day in that tree taking a nap, but something else had different plans for her.

A bird-like squawk escaped her lips as she fell to the ground suddenly. It was an odd sensation, considering she didn’t remember rolling off the branch at all. Actually, she didn’t remember wearing black robes either. Jay crinkled her nose as she held the sleeves with two fingers. She was covered up way too much, but at least it was loose. Then again, loose clothes easily caught onto things during fights.

Shoot, Jay couldn’t remember when she got a stick in her hand either. She quizzically stared at the plain wooden stick in her hands. Sure, it was pretty fancy (in a way, perhaps) but the warrior had no need for pretty sticks. She nearly flung it away, but then realized something important was missing.

Her wings.

“W-What?” she stammered as she spun around in a vain attempt to find her wings. She lifted her robe, but only found dull clothes underneath. “What is going on?! I don’t understand.” Jay frowned as she searched for the nearest mirror to inspect her reflection more closely.

Who ever had done this had a terrible sense of humor. As Lan looked around her, the voice of someone familiar reached her ears. “Jay?” Hope, that she wasn’t alone. Why Jay would be here Lan hadn’t a clue, but a fellow horsewoman was better than no one. And maybe she knew why Lan didn’t have horns. It had to be a trick. Just like that dang illusion queen thing. She just didn’t want to remain in some hellish nightmare, hornless, like some… some fre-. He mind froze at the thought. She shouldn’t think of a noble without horns as such. She shouldn’t. Yet she did. A bitter reality, one she tried to ignore. After all, she couldn’t just make exceptions. That wasn’t how things worked.

Mengyao was an oddity, but he wasn’t.. like that. If he could face each day without them, so could she. She just.. would need to just.. illusion. She was fine, she’d be fine. Something was coming from down the hall, and Lan looked around her, gold eyes finding the blue hair. “Jay, if that is you… let’s go.” One door to take, Lan just wanted her horns back. And to be back in her robes. And not deal with illusions.

Her new cloak continued to billow around her as she frantically tried to search for her wings and previous attire, but neither was in sight. Jay frowned, but slumped her shoulders as she accepted the truth. Something had taken away her wings, and the warrior would have to find out what it was. Her face lit up as she noticed a fellow horsewoman. Eyes glowing, she stood on her toes and waved. “Lan!” she called back. Not the face she wanted to see most, but not a face she wanted to see least either.

“…Ah.” Jay remained silently as she heard the sound of something approaching quickly. She searched through the corridors, but still couldn’t see it. Then she nodded to Lan and began to run in the opposite direction of the sound. “Sounds like a great idea to me!” she chirped as she briefly tugged at Lan’s robes before darting toward the door in front of them. For some reason, she still held a stick in her hand. She wanted to drop it, but it felt a bit warm. Huh. The door flung open without her assistance. Jay didn’t bother to stop and stare before she rushed in.

Once in the other room, Lan froze in place, wondering just why she didn’t seem to be able to call her bow to her. She’d feel a lot safer with her bow really. Or with her horn. Her precious, precious horns. The door shutting hardly got a second glance as gold eyes widened with the sudeen Cerberus. “Jay.” Lan took a deep breath before trying to edge away from the nearest head. “I think this is not the most idea of places to have gone to.”

As she said that, the heads snapped forward, making Lan stumble down, trying to avoid snapping jaws.

As soon as she entered the room with Lan, Jay heard the door swing shut. She froze and slowly turned toward the closed door. “…Oh.” While Lan hardly paid attention to the closed door, the warrior did. It was only when the other horseman called out to her that she bothered to look forward once again. “What’re you talking about?” she questioned before she followed Lan’s gaze. Her jaw clenched up as she gritted her teeth together. “Oh. I see.” She too began to step away from the beast. “Why didn’t I see that earlier?” she muttered to herself before she sidestepped hastily to avoid its heads.

She clicked her tongue as she grasped a limp arm. Great.

Lan frowned, but not towards Jay so much at the beast before them. “Now this is why I do so hate halloweeners. They are just crude. This one is flat brutish!” Trying to smack it away, she didn’t manage to get much farther. “Don’t blame yourself, this… place is not the most kind to the senses.” Managing a rather undignified roll, Lan gave a cry of frustration as the robes refused to co-operate.

“I still don’t understand why we have sticks!”

To be honest, this entire world absolutely and completely baffled the jabberjay. First, she no longer possessed her beautiful wings and for some reason she could not summon her dagger to fling at the dog, which would have been rather helpful. Jay would have gladly thrown it at one of its many eyes, but no, here the warrior was, stuck in a room with only one familiar face and donning loose robes that were completely dull and nothing like her usual clothes.

And to make matters even better, she had to run around the room trying to avoid the three-headed dog’s monstrous jaws while holding onto an injured arm. Whatever had caused it, couldn’t it have at least given Jay her bandages? It felt so awkward to flit around with bare hands.

“Lan! What’re we supposed to do?” called out the horseman as she once again jumped out of the dog’s way. She crinkled her nose at the monster, but continued to wiggle her way through its legs and perked up when she noticed a trapdoor. “Oh! Hey—“ Her voice was cut off as the dog finally found the bird at last. It almost seemed to grin as it snapped her right up.

Oops.

“I am not sure may- JAY!” Lan cried out as the war horseman was snapped up. Rage filled the horsewoman as she dove from the jaws again. A dive for the door Jay had tried for... and she was safe... somewhat.

ANd then... Okay. The pieces were white and black but this was not the game her father had tried to teach her. Not at all. Perhaps that was why she died in the end.
