Cheshire Kitten is based on the Cheshire Cat, probably the one from the 2010 Alice in Wonderland film (instead of the 1951 film), especially given the timing of the item's release, and the fact that Cheshire Kitten isn't purple. Cheshire Kitten's (Can't Be Beheaded) and (Adult) poses are more likely to be based on the Cheshire Cat in the video games, American McGee's Alice and Alice: Madness Returns.
The name "Underland" (the CI that you can obtain Cheshire Kitten from) is probably a play on the word "Wonderland."
