One thing he appreciated was that the reaper didn't verbally lash out at him, didn't call him a cheater, or coward, or just shout obscenities at him. Yes, this was a battle, fight for life or death, there was no such thing as a fair fight, no such thing as fighting on even grounds. You took whatever advantage you had, and used it. Anyone who thought otherwise shouldn't bother fighting. This wasn't a game, there were no rules. You did what you could, to save the skin on your back.
Though he could see that the reaper was wounded, it didn't hinder him, and Jake barely got out of the way in time as a dagger scrapped against his shield. In doing so, he had lost track of him, and gritted his teeth, taking a deep breath to calm himself. If he let this get to him, he didn't deserve to call himself a hunter.
Catching a flash of black from the corner of his eye, he reached out, swinging one of the bladed tonfas toward the figure.

If only every encounter with Halloween creatures could be like this. He would never admit it, but this was probably one of the most pleasant encounters he ever had... if it could even be called that. No unnecessary quips, comments, just hand-to-hand combat... or in this case, blades.
The impact of the reaper's attacks was absorbed by the shield, but from the location of the strikes, the reaper was aiming to kill.
Jake smirked. This was fine with him. If he should go down, he'd rather be done in by a Halloween creature then a crazed hunter, one who he had no desire to associate with anymore.
The memory made him frown, and he grit his teeth, lashing out at the reaper in anger.

Part of him felt a bit guilty, but it was quickly washed away.
He was a hunter, he wasn't supposed to sympathize with the enemy, but he couldn't help but feel that though they fought, they weren't all that much different. They'd rather not waste their breath with useless banter, but both refused to back down.
He saw the dagger, but barely got out of the way in time as it tore into his shield, threatening to touch flesh. The runes on his weapons glowed and flickered, and before he knew what was happening, a neon-shaped shield shot out from the right tonfa, elongating the shape to form a translucent green crescent.
... Well. That was new.
