Travis jumped when he heard the cat eating. He hadn't even noticed it come in. Trav smiled, at least Thomas was eating. He had heard of some animals getting distressed after their owners died and getting moved in with new families that they don't even eat. Thomas had already proven to be pretty smart though so Trav wasn't too worried about the cat adjusting. He seemed to be doing just fine. He went back to cooking his meal. blackened chicken over fettuccine noodles with an oil and herb sauce. A side of green beans and sauteed peppers. It didnt take him long to finish and he sprinkled a bit of Parmesan cheese over his noodles. He had barely started eating when the cat jumped on the table.

Drys watched Thomas curiously. "You just ate all your food and you still want some of mine?" He knocked his plate out of the way just before cat paws landed on his food. "If you want some then wait. Its rude to put your hands on other peoples food." He picked up a piece of chicken and put it on the table n from of Thomas. He took a bite of his food. He was hungry and had barely time to eat all day. He had a muffin over the course of a few hours as his lunch. Travis watched the cat eat the chicken and he sighed. "I miss dad...I bet you do too...I'm sorry you got stuck with someone like me." He got up grabbed another plate and dumped a little of everything onto it. "At least your eating." He reached out his hand and brushed his fingers on top of the cats head again before going back to eating his food.

Travis felt bad for all the pranks he played on the cat as a kid. Probably the reason the cat hated him. He finished up his food clearing his plate. He might start making a little extra if Thomas was going to make a habit of begging. He wasn't good at saying no to animals. Travis picked up his plate and the empty one now cleaned by the cat and washed them out in the sink. He washed all the dishes used to cook the meal and set them out to dry. He had a dishwasher but never really felt the need to use it unless he had a bunch of guests over.

Travis headed towards his room when all was said and done and pulled off his work pants replacing them with soft long pj bottoms and removed his shirt. He was about to climb in bed when he noticed a pillow missing and stopped. Where the hell did the pillow go? It was his favorite one too. He started looking to see if it just got knocked to the floor before finally after a bit more in depth searching found it under the bed. He pulled it out and layed it back on the bed. He sighed. So this is what living with a cat was like? It was going to be interesting if said pet kept trying to steal his pillows. "You can have this one, or you can just sleep on the bed. I don't mind."

He used to hate animals, probably always had until a friend of his forced him to watch his dog for three weeks. By the end of it he wanted to keep the dog. It made his house seem incredibly empty when there wasn't anything waiting for him to come home anymore. but cats were different. Especially this one. He wasn't even sure why he had fed it or offered to let it sleep on the bed. Maybe he was just lonely or maybe a bit sad that his father was dead. Really this cat just made him feel a little closer to his now deceased father and it felt comforting to have him around.

Travis climbed in bed turned of the lights and closed his eyes. The past few days hit him like a rock and he wanted nothing more but to travel back and time and spend more of it with his father. but for now he had to try and sleep a bit. He was going to need it.

Thomas looked sourly up at Travis after the other moved the plate out of the way, thinking about how he would've snarkily reply he had paws, not hands, if he could've. But he could not. His tail gave one lash and he was contemplating going to go find something precious of the third son's to shred with his claws ... when Travis did something rather unexpected. The feline froze, eyes looking down at the offered chicken and then up at Travis and back again before quickly grabbing up the delicious mouthful in his jaws and chewing it quickly. After being stuck in the nursing home with nothing more than kibble to eat and water to drink, actual food was a wonderful, wonderful thing to the cat. As he enjoyed the taste of nicely flavored white meat, the feline's ears cupped forward as Travis spoke.

Yeah; he did miss the old man. And it did suck he was stuck with son number three ... but at least Travis wasn't as bad as son number one, or son number two. Thomas was licking his whisker thoughtfully as he finished the bit of chicken, wondering how he could go about helping to 'take care of Travis' for the old man, and generally making the son's life better. That's what the old guy had wanted; one last job for the cat to do for the guy he owed his life to. And it was nice, having a job instead of just being stuck being sad and without direction. But Travis was out of luck when it came to inheriting money ... but his cafe wasn't doing too shabby. So how could a cat make his life better?

Thomas blinked, watching Travis coming over with a plate, not understanding at first, before the scent of more fresh food hit his nose and he was digging into his own share of some proper food. If anything, at least Travis was a good cook. The feline even elected to only flick his ears as Travis lightly touched his head, instead of fully stiffening to show his displeasure; gracing the other with less of a hostile showing. Well, he's still single. Maybe he needs help getting a lady into his life. Yeah, that's it! He just needs to get laid, or married, or whatever guys like him do.

Goal in mind, Thomas finished licking his plate clean with his rough tongue before leaping lightly down from the table and proceeding to stroll around the living space like he owned the place, tail high and nose investigating every shady corner to get a proper lay of the land before 'stealthily' following Travis to the bedroom. The feline frowned as 'his' new pillow was found, but his ears perked at hearing he was welcome on the bed itself. Making like he didn't understand English, Thomas strolled into the bedroom and sniffed around innocently, as if he hadn't even set foot into the room before that moment. Thomas continued strolling around, waiting until Travis had gotten into bed and was apparently sleeping. Then the feline cautiously approached the bed, springing lightly up onto the mattress and curling up on top of the sheets. Thomas fit himself into the spot right against the curve of Travis's back, and proceeded to sleep himself.

Luckily, for th first night at least, the cat was not smooshed or accidentally laid on. Though at roughly four thirty in the morning when Travis's usual morning alarms went off Thomas shot off of the bed like a bat out of hell; used to retired living. Which meant no getting up early; and sure as heck no getting woken up by the metallic screeching of an alarm that set all his fur up on-end. The bristling tomcat hunkered down on the couch with his ears flat against his head and glaring Travis's way; if the unfortunate man even attempted to bring a hand close to the feline Thomas was not going to sheathe his claws. Simply put, the cat had definitely been woken up on the wrong side of the bed.

Though ... if Travis made a warm breakfast, the cat was going to completely ignore his own catfood and proceed to beg as only cats could: with loud demanding meows that would not cease until they got what they wanted. And in Thomas's case, since Travis had given in the night before the feline was going to not touch another stinking bit of cat kibble or smelly canned catfood so long as the other was cooking good food.

Travis hadn't been able to fall asleep till long after he felt the cat curl up against him. He had spent most of the night just trying to relax his mind and keep thoughts of his father at arms length. The alarm came way too sudden and way too soon but he woke obediently to it and shut it off. He chuckled a bit at Thomas' reaction to the loud sound and figured he could probably turn the volume down some as he was completely used to waking up at 4:30 that he practically did on his own anyway. He got up dressed for his run and headed out after a quick look for where the cat was. When he saw the cat curled up on the couch he chuckled again. Poor thing looked traumatized. "Sorry cat, I'll be back shortly, morning run then breakfast."

Travis's run ended early. About ten minutes in he had to stop because running wasn't clearing his thoughts like he was used to it doing. He ended up heading back hoping breakfast and a good shower would help. He kept it together quite good the past couple days but today, after last night he was having a hard time. He got back to the apartment greeting a sleepy Maria who had begun to open up shop. Their first customer of the day was always Angelina, a twenty something who enjoyed grabbing coffee after her own early morning run.

He made his way back upstairs tossing himself into the shower cleaning rinsing and drying. He didn't have time to spend forever in the shower and there wasn't a need to, to begin with. He dressed for work in a nice pair of khakis and a light blue vneck. Off to the kitchen he pulled out dome frozen batter and a pan. Then he pulled out another pan and began to make some oatmeal. he was really good at cooking and it had always come natural to him but he especially loved breakfast food. It was kind of like desert first thing in the morning.

Finishing up making enough for him, and this time a bit extra for the cat he put his portion and the cats on the table. a small bowl and plate filled with a portion of this mornings breakfast. He began to eat and figured if anything this was a decent apology for the alarm this morning. "I'll turn my alarm volume down so you don't die of fright tomorrow morning. I forgot I'm housing someone else now."

Thomas flicked his fluffed-up tail unhappily at hearing he would have to wait for his food, but took the time to calm a little and groom himself into a more presentable appearance by the time Travis was back. Strolling up to the offered breakfast foods like it was only his rightful due to get such nice things to eat, the tom cat dug in to eat, not even reacting as Travis spoke. It was only right for the other to turn the blasted alarm down a little; no need to thank the guy for doing what needed to be done. As Thomas licked his plate clean, the feline arched his back in a stretch before hoping down from the table and making his way over to the door that led to the stairs down to the storage room, and in extension the cafe, giving a low demanding meow to be let out.

If he was to find Travis a woman, man, or whatever to sleep with, he needed to be in a good position for people watching. Like down in the cafe.

Downstairs, John was just rolling in, carrying in the fresh supplies for the day's orders. As a cafe they didn't need too many fresh ingredients per-day, but John was more than happy to be the one picking them up, putting all the foodstuff in its proper places and giving Maria his usual greetings before getting to baking up some of the snacks they sold alongside their drink options.

Travis didnt take long to eat and he was cleaning the dishes when he heard Thomas meow. He stared at the cat for a second before putting the dishes up to dry before finding his way to the apartment door to let the cat out. He had decided to try and be civil to the cat to give it a chance like he had his friends dog. But so far cats were confusing and he was just going to end up with a cat that hated him for the rest of its life. How long did cats live anyway? Oh well hed look it up later.

He followed the cat down the stairs sending a hello johns way before grabbing some more ingredients from the back of the others car. Most of the recipes Travis had come up with himself after trying out a bunch and then tweaking them till they were perfect. His muffins, bagels, doughnuts, scones, so on and so forth were actually pretty damn popular, and in a industrial area like this with starbucks hard to find, his coffee was just as good and sometimes he was told better. A lot of his customers liked the fact his coffee didnt taste burnt like starbucks did much of the time.

They got to work placing the freshly bought fruit, packaging things, setting up the machines and pulling out fresh pastries from the back. Five fifteen hit and travis unlocked the doors and opened them for his first two customers of the day. "Good morning mary-ann, vince, the night shift run smoothly?" They were still in uniforms and mayr-ann chuckled, "Good as the night shift could go dear, no accidents and no slow downs. I'd say were in for a celebration this morning." She was older but could hold her own. Vince scoffed, "Celebration my a**, when we have no slow downs my shoulders hurt." Their coffees were already prepared by john and the only thing they had to order was breakfast. Today they were making fresh pancakes and eggs were also on the menu.

Cheerful banter exploded around the cafe as two more walked in and people began greeting each other, once again winding down or waking up. Travis smiled he didn't make much or go behind the counter unless it got extra busy. mostly though he managed the floor made sure no one needed anything or held open the door.

at about 7 a pretty brunette in a suit walked in, all proper and uptight. She ordered her coffe snootily and found her way into a corner proping open her laptop to type furiously on her keyboard. A few other prospective females walked in but travis barely paid attention to anyone for too long. Sometimes hed glance at a girl or a guy for a bit longer, sometimes give them a once over but usually he never did more. There was one slightly younger blonde guy who walked in that travis went back specifically to make his drink for and a joke or two was passed over the counter, maybe even a flirt? but he was gone too fast to tell. He had done this with a redheaded woman earlier.

Travis stopped around 9 to check on Thomas before he went to check the water, dry food, and litter box. when nothing seemed out of place and the water bowl rinsed and refilled travis found his way back into the shop only to jump back behind the counter. In the short time he had gone to the back the shop had gotten a bit of a rush and it felt lively with the flux of people. Hed run about picking up dishes and wiping down tables, doing dishes in the back to helping behind the counter, his brain completely on work.

Meanwhile a little girl named Tessa had found Thomas' hiding spot. "Your a pretty kitty. Mind if i pet you? mom told me i have to ask first and be very gentle." She smiled, her carrot red hair lit up from the sun and her pale skin was rittled in freckles but she gave off an air of sweetness and sincerity.

Thomas padded down the stairs as fluidly as water down a pipe, ignoring Travis and John as the two began moving the fresh ingredients from the car to the store room. Instead the feline went right to the cafe and made himself comfortable, finding a nice spot on the counter from which to look around the empty cafe as the owner and his two employees got to work getting ready for the first customers of the day. Thomas leisurely stretched as the work went on, curling up and taking a light nap until he was awoken by the noise of the day's first customers coming in. The cat sighed sleepily, not used to getting up at such a darn early hour and also not happy there was really no 'safe' space to hide as people started really pouring in. Sure, he could shift position to quiet nooks and crannies and tables, but to do that he had to be awake and paying attention; two things he didn't exactly want to do all day long. Especially with the hours Travis was working. Did the idiot third son do this every day? Ugh; too tiresome. The feline did not understand such work ethic, but wasn't about to waste the breath meowing about it.

Thomas watched the dinners and caffeine sippers come in and out, snatching a few bites of leftovers from left plates a few times, though John lightly scolded the feline when he caught the cat at it. Most people foods weren't exactly the best for cats to eat, after all, especially pastries and pancakes, right? As far as John knew in his limited knowledge on felines it was best to just keep them to their prescribed pet food. But as more customers came in, John decided to talk to the boss later about it. Plus having a stray-looking collarless cat eating off of plates on the cafe table wouldn't exactly look good for their reputation.

Thomas bristled at the help not allowing him to nibble on the table scraps, but just scurried away silently and found himself a high spot to observe as the morning went on. The feline frowned as Travis seemed to ignore most customers beyond the usual service he gave, tail twitching thoughtfully. This wouldn't work; trying to hook up son number three with a customer during work hours would be a definite no-go. Though there did seem to be a few people that might fit the bill for potential mate. The trick would be trying to hook up the workaholic son sometime afterhours ...

The feline gave Travis a little glare when the man finally came around to apparently make sure the inherited pet wasn't dead or anything along those lines before leaving to head up to the living space. Thomas was beginning to groom himself when the population of customers within the little cafe suddenly took a rather uncomfortable upswing, leading the tabby to take a moment to hide himself a bit better. Only to be found by a small, grubby human child. He stared up at the little redhead from the corner he'd curled up in, not in a particularly 'pettable' mood. But ... there wasn't really a way to escape unless he wanted to dash across the crowded cafe floor where treading feet could easily step on him or his tail if he dared move from his 'safe' corner off to the side. So he moodily lay there and flattened his ears at the petting he got; sincere or not, all kids had grubby hands. Unhappy or not, he at least didn't hiss, bite, or scratch. Having an animal attack a customer would not be good for Travis, and right now Thomas was trying to be on his 'best behavior' until he'd gotten the guy a happy life with some girl ... or guy. As far as Thomas could see, Travis swung both ways.

But then yet another customer entered the shop, and Thomas hardly cared ... until he caught scent of the guy who'd entered. Thomas' back arched and he couldn't help the low, unpleasant noise in the back of his throat, eyes and ears on the expensive shoes (the only part he could see from where he was) walking across the cafe to the front register where Travis was currently working. Son number one had just entered the building.

'Son number one' being Peter, inheritor not only of half of their brother's father's wealth, but also the man who'd come to inherent their father's business as well. The second son, Samuel, had a nice desk job and decent pay check. Peter had a top-dog position in the rather massive company that had netted their father the fortune he'd amassed, and he sure did look it. Peter held himself confidently, wearing a business suit and looking every inch a man physically and mentally at the top of his game. Not like Sam, who looked far more like a man secretly unhappy with most of his life; or at the very least his wife. Peter waited his turn in line, glancing at his phone from time to time before reaching the front of the line and looking at Travis.

"The time for the funeral has been arranged; this Saturday at one o'clock. I thought I'd tell you personally, and see how you were ..." Peter looked pointedly around the busy cafe, and did not seem very impressed. "... coping with the loss." Peter held out a hand with a small, neatly written note in it: an address and name of a church. Likely where the funeral was going to be held. "I trust you have the proper clothes for the occasion?"
