THE EXAM: HOUSE OF HORRORS (Y1 > Y2)

Each student ready to move from the first year to the second would find a nice, neatly printed letter taped to their door inviting them to participate in a "Non-Mandatory-But-Highly-Recommended-Anyway Test" (or NMBHRAT for short). A location was provided at the bottom of the note (a section of the grounds, just near the forest), and beneath that the words "Come at anytime."

Upon arrival, you would first notice that a peculiar house has been erected. It's not large enough to overshadow any of the dorms by any means; in fact, it seems rather tiny and shabby in comparison, with the door half stripped of its paint, the windows cracked and smeared with dust, and everything looks as though the merest touch will make it collapse.

At first you wonder if you're in the right place at all, but then you notice a little box sitting just outside of the house. Closer examination would reveal a note, written in a loopy handwriting perhaps familiar to some:

Welcome welcome to the House
Please be quiet as a mouse
The House will tell if you are good
The House will tell if you are bad

Think you're up to face the thing?
If you pass it, all will sing
Do your best, oh fair student
I hope your deaths you do circumvent

THE EXAM
THE HOUSE OF HORRORS

The smell is what gets your attention first; like smoke and old wood, it wafts across the air towards you, enticing you onward, pulling you forward, and you reach the little shabby house and the door half hanging off its hinges, practically begging you to come inside.

A sign posted outside reads "Welcome to the House."

At first, you're mildly concerned but upon knocking stepping inside, you realize that the house in question appears deserted.

Well, that's just creepy. But trying to go backwards only results in failure - the door has locked behind you. You're trapped inside, and now you must figure out how to get through the house in order to continue on your quest.

--------------------------------------------

TO GET THROUGH THE HOUSE:

There are THREE MAJOR ROOMS to the House of Horrors. In order to successfully pass through the House and receive your exam credit, you must navigate through all three rooms until you reach the exit, located after the very last room:

  • Cutthroat Kitchen

To get through the Cutthroat Kitchen, you need 10 steps. Roll 1d4 and add up the amount of steps you take (i.e. you roll a 3, that's 3 steps forward). You must get at least 10 steps. If you go over ten, that's fine, as long as it's at least 10.

Each number of steps rolled has it's own consequence:
1 - You open a door in the kitchen looking for the exit and promptly find yourself dunked by a bucket of icy water. Who left that there?
2 - You trip and fall into a vat of what looks like melted chocolate.
3 - You step in a pile of what looks like sticky glue on the floor and therefore get it stuck on the bottom of your foot/shoe for the rest of your trek through the House.
4 - For some reason, there is an entire bin of tiny bones that you somehow manage to knock over, which, of course, makes a terribly loud sound.

  • Lurking Library

In order to get through the Library, you'll have to find the right combination of books in order to find the combination. Roll 3d6, and follow the guidelines below:

      - 1,1 OR 2,2 as two of the numbers - Looks like you've found some sort of...oops better put that back quickly before a certain cranky Librarian sees you looking at por - (try again)
      - 3,3 OR 4,4 OR 5,5 OR 6,6 as two of the numbers - You pull out a book, and then another, and to your relief you see that the door beyond swings open for you to slip through! (success)
      - 1,2,3 (doesn't have to be in order) - Somehow you get entangled in what looks like a long rope made of paper and spend several moments trying to break your way free, when you notice that in the process you've actually fallen out the door into the next room. How convenient! (success)
      - 6,6,6 Is that a giant spi - quick run for it - (start back in the first room)
      - 1,1,1 You try climbing a bookshelf, rather than pull books trying to find the secret switch, and wind up tumbling over the side rather ungracefully. But hey, look, the...nope, just a shadow (try again)

  • Bloodcurdling Bedroom

The Bloodcurdling Bedroom requires only one thing - picking the lock successfully to get through the door on the other side. Roll 1d100. You must get above a 65 to have successfully picked the lock. If you roll below, then your attempts were unsuccessful and you have to keep on truckin'.

Upon their exit from the house, a certain mischievous Trick or Treater can be found lounging in a tree on the other side, looking as happy as a pig in mud. He smiles down at you, his grin terribly self-satisfied, and tosses you a rolled up piece of parchment. Opening it, you see a certificate of Exam Completion.

"Congratulations," he says brightly, and flashes you a wink. "You're now a Knob."

When Pickles first got the note on his door, he thought it might be for disciplinary action.

He wasn't sure why...the old him certainly deserved it, but he'd been diligent about attending class, participation, and even battling. He'd also been balancing it with his new job, working for Vadra, on loan from his dad's company as backpay for all the...miscreantism. He'd...he'd learned a lot, really, and he'd been trying so hard, and if his dad caught wind of this-

Pickworth swallowed thickly, trying not to cry as he read the letter in his hands.

"Oh," he said quietly, "it's...it's for an exam. But...I haven't studied. It doesn't say the subject, either. Is this...on official stationary?"

He checked the letter, and it did seem to be official. Which meant...

His father was probably going to be disappointed no matter what he did.

When he went to where the spot was marked on the map, there was a very old house. There didn't seem to be anyone else there.

He straightened his bow tie and walked very carefully up a creaky step of wooden steps.

"H-hello?" he tried, opening the door and peeking his head in. Maybe there was a front desk. He risked stepping into the foyer.

"Is this where the exam room-?" The door slammed shut behind him. Pickworth whirled around, hands rattling the doorknob, but it was shut tight.

"Hello?" he asked again, in panic and despair. He didn't even have anybody here to help him. He didn't have any choice but to explore. And...find where the exam was, he guessed. He was going to be late. His dad would hear about this, for sure.

There was a squelching noise as he stepped in something...sticky.

"G...great, just...that's, really great..." Although is shoes did need a fun tacky noise now, which he did enjoy, although he could never tell anyone.

Strck! strck! strck! strrrrrck!

The glue was everywhere. If this kept up, he was going to lose his shoes.

This was the kitchen, Pickworth realized. Surely, they wouldn't have an exam in here. Unless it was a cooking exam. He...could sort of cook. He liked cooking. Only from recipes, and not deviating.

To be honest, though, he liked free food better.

Whoever had been in here earlier had made a wonderful, strike that, a terrible mess.

At last, he stumbled free of the kitchen, pulling himself free of the tacky floor and leaning against the doorknob, panting. That had been more work than it was worth! The door swung open into a hall of books.

Finally. This looked more like what a...proper exam should be.

An exam he hadn't studied for. A nightmare of questions swirled in his head.

Before he could have time to think about them, however, swinging door dumped a bucket of ice water on his head.

"Hey, haha, that isn't, ha- funny..." He tried to keep a straight face, but sopping wet and making silly noises, it was hard to. He was in the hands of...of...delinquents!

While he was here, he guessed he should look at some of the erm, material...he quietly took a few books down from the shelf, and as he was doing so, he noticed a door on the other side of the room open invitingly.

Was it...for him?

There didn't seem to be any exams here, anyway. Or any examiners. He put the books back where he had found them, and left, a little relieved.

Inside was a bedroom. Someone's personal bedroom. Pickworth blushed pretty thoroughly.

This...this wasn't what it was all leading to, was it? A prank set up by um...someone looking to romance him. Is that why they'd gotten his clothes wet...? He'd thought it was, kind of funny, at the time, if not...inappropriate, but now....

"I'm...I'm sorry!" Pickles said aloud. "But I don't know you! And, you'd have to ask my dad for permission, and-!" He bolted across to try to open the opposite door. When it was locked, he jiggled the handle even more furiously than before.

It had about the same effectiveness.

Pickles got out his lockpick.

It was a chainsaw.

As it roared to life, he bore down on the stubborn handle and splintering, agonized wood.

"S-sorry!" He apologized to no one in particular as the door creaked under the furious assault.

Even with all the creaking, cracking, and groaning, the door still didn't give way.

"I already have a bhoulfriend!" Pickworth lied.

He should have gone to lockpicking class. But it seemed like a mischief sort of thing. He didn't know it would be important to save his...um, honor.

He felt like just sitting down and crying. He was stuck here forever and now he'd have to marry someone and they probably weren't even looking for a business merger and his dad was going to be so mad at him.

Pickworth slumped to his knees.

"Please, little lock," he cajoled, still holding the whirring chainsaw. "Please open up."

The lock didn't care about him. Nobody cared about him. He slumped against the door, cheek on the wood.

Maybe the person who abducted him to seduce him would care about him.

Or, maybe...

He looked up at the lock again, then pulled his hat over his eyes angrily. He yanked Buzz's chain, and the chainsaw lit up again, this time with purpose. This time, when he raised the chainsaw, it wasn't for outright destruction, but with purposeful strokes.

"Haidzruno runu!" He began threateningly, as he'd been taught. He came from a long line of sorcerers and enchanters, and telling items to do is what they did. The strikes from the chainsaw began to glow in humming succession, whirling with magic energy.

Listen door,
you work for me,
at my command
you'll set me free!

The door hissed and spat for a moment in conflicting magic and energy, then swung open as if forced on its hinges.

Pickworth twirled the chainsaw on one finger and hung it on his hip, then froze.

He hoped nobody had seen that.

As he finally spilled outside, relieved, onto the lawn, it became apparent that someone had seen it.

"Sorry, sir!" He squeaked. "I-I-I..."

The grinning figure gave him a piece of paper, probably a bill or a violation or a court order- but instead, there was a shining gold certificate with his name emblazoned over it, and written across the top in curling letters...

"A...a promotion?" Pickworth whispered.
