He kicked the shadow away one last time, and when he realized that it was so exhausted it could hardly move, he struck.

"Listen, just - give me that for a moment-"

Did Gabby just whip out a comb from his pocket and begin to comb the shadow's hair?

Gabby accidentally pulled a hair out from his shadow's head.

This would have killed the real Gabby, in any circumstance. But shadow-Gabby had already been almost dead from battling, and when the hair was plucked, he dissipated into thin air.

Gabby felt a true sense of loss.

With a slow, mourning gait, Gabby left the maze and confronted the professor, taking the parchment that is handed to him. He looked up with a melancholy gaze, as the professor welcomes him to Hob level. But as he leaves to return home, all he can think about is what he's lost.

Goodbye, beautiful friend. Gabby will miss you more than you could ever know.
