He stalked her for days, week, months. Time had little meaning when you were on the hunt. He watched her while she slept, grinned at her from the shadows, red eyes and too many teeth. Now it ended with blood. Not hers, though at times he had desired it. He'd been so close to snapping, to gobbling her right up as she lay in innocent slumber. Instead he'd laid beside her, as he had with the lamb and now she was no more to him than a memory.

He ended his bloodfast with a bunny, caught up in his path and with no chance of survival. It was far too easy. He'd wanted a struggle. Instead he tore the small creature in half with little effort, doused his muzzle in blood and then stood in sudden perfect stillness. Warm droplets dribbled down his chin as he focused on his surroundings, his nostrils flared and he realized, with a baring of red teeth, that he was not alone.

This...this beast.

All of the MotherFather's children were worthy and able for a blessing, but...what if this one wanted them to be like him? A seemingly innocent thing, but when you witness the father all but tearing a rabbit in half without so much as a shriek of surprise...

Ascent came too close. His sudden silence and seeking eyes were sharp, knowing that the hunter had been alerted to her presence. When his eyes found her, she was upright, attentive, blazing white eyes fixated on him probably not much unlike the rabbit might have been had it the chance. Her head and neck were unmoving as she took a careful step towards him, tail flicking once to the side.

"You have called me," she told him quietly, calmly. As if Ascent was taking no part in blame for being there. "I have answered the call as the MotherFather entrusted me to." Did she think invoking the name of the Great would perhaps stall the beast? No, not even a little, but it was worth trying.

A snarl rolled through him. It began deep in his chest, a vibrating roll of sound, heavy with menace. With blood still fresh and hunters lust still racing through him, words were impossible. He’d reverted, as he always did, to the mindless monster, the deadly beast, irredeemable.

‘You called me’, she had said and he wondered, briefly, though the fog, if he had howled to the sky and just didn’t remember, or if the sounds of the hunt had brought her to him. But no, the look in her eyes said prey and he responded accordingly, a ripple of anticipation running through his body.

Motherfather. He’d known that word once, but no longer. It held no power here.

MotherFather, she asked inwardly, trying not to feel despair in her heart, please grant me understanding.

Why him...and not me?

A touch of her petulant annoyance from her days in the plains flickered across her otherwise kindly face, and rearing back on her hind legs, her form wavered and evaporated into a plume of flower petals and feathers. Rising from it, her swan form flew to the safety of boughs high enough out of the wolf's immediate reach (for wasn't that what he was - a wolf, she thought), looking down her beak at him.

That was it. She wasn't certain he would ask anything of her. She wasn't sure he was capable.

His muscles tensed, body settling into an easy lunge, his gaze focusing on the curve of her neck where a great vein waited. He aborted his attack halfway, so that he moved into three lurching steps instead, coming to a slow halt beneath the tree and peering up into the branches at the kin turned swan.

It was not every day your prey changed form. It was almost enough to jolt him out of his madness.

He cocked his head and listened. Father. An image filled his mind of a soft smile, the fluttering of her heart when he curled up beside her, the chase and the sweet reward. Then he opened his mouth, showing off those wicked fangs and laughed.

The wolf laughed and laughed and laughed until he had no breath left to laugh with.

When he suddenly spoke, it was with a deep and grating voice, the words falling like pulled teeth. "They will hunt," he said. It was not so much a request, as a fact, as if his blood would always run strong.

The swan lifted its head, and with it, her Kiokote form shimmered above, chin lifted in an indignant manner. He was a hunter - pure hunger shrouded in darkness - but she would not be his prey. Were she younger, Ascent would mock his inability to reach her, but she was wiser now, and a messenger of the MotherFather's will. Even if she didn't understand it.

"That is not something I can grant nor spare them," she replied, her voice strong despite her disquiet, "but yes. They will hunt." A reluctant agreement if ever there was one. Her form shimmered away, leaving only the swan once more. "May they hunt with eyes unclouded and mind free of a driving force they cannot sway."

It was all she could do. If they came out like him, well...MotherFather's will be done.

Her admittance was pleasing. The wolf had realized that, on this day, he would not tear out her feathers and break her neck. She would leave here alive, by hoof or wing. Let her go, his mind whispered, to carry the thoughts of his offspring.

He rubbed his bulk against the tree, sliding against the bark with an ever present leer and then simply loped away without another word or glance.

Ascent watched him through the eyes of her given form, quiet, giving him no further boons. She watched him all but promise that the encounter would not be the same if it happened again. She watched him push against the tree, felt the fine tremble of his power through the bark. She watched him go.

"MotherFather will it so," she murmured before taking flight, leaving the place and memory behind.
