[B] A Singularly Curious Matter

Singularity was not cut out for motherhood, that much she was certain of. The doe was too focused on the curiosities of being herself and the uncertainties of the universe. Children... children were too soft, too simple. Besides that, the doe wasn't certain she could afford the time to rear them. They'd be fine on their own, wouldn't they? They had her blood, and the blood of a Totoma- certainly they'd be strong. Her mind raced as she stared at her own, perfect reflection in the water. Perhaps it would be a learning experience, raising them?

"Maybe it won't be TOO bad," Singularity argued with herself, sighing.

A short hop away across the water, a burning pink sand dog scritched an ear and watched with cheerful interest as the doe struggled with herself.

There was nothing Rouge loved better than listening in on the sweet emotions of impending motherhood.

"Bark!" she offered helpfully.

Oh, how lovely. This was the company she was keeping now. Looking from her own reflection to the weird dog, Singularity regarded it with something between confusion and derision. How sad and tumultuous an existence was she living that a dog was mocking her.

"You. Dog," She called, sitting a bit more upright. "You wouldn't happen to have any motherhood advice, would you?"

Yeah right.

Well, there was something Rouge did like better, and that was nosing her way into other people's business.

"Daughters are nice, but sons are good too," she said, abruptly spinning into an Acha mare, "teach 'em everything you know and they'll sort the rest out. Kids are easy.

"Now, puppies," she added as an afterthought, "puppies can be tricky. You've gotta watch out for the dropsy."

THAT was a turn of events Singularity had not been expecting. She blinked- several times, just to make sure her eyes could trust what she was seeing. And yes, that certainly was an acha now. As inconspicuously as possible, Singularity eyed the water she'd been drinking, just to make certain she hadn't ingested anything... questionable. With that ruled out, she turned her attention back to the acha.

"That... makes sense," she agreed, nodding dumbly to the stranger. But then... puppies?

"I.. I don't believe I'm having puppies."

"Then you won't have to watch out for the dropsy."

Rouge splashed across the water with natural Acha grace, "But I do recommend having puppies anyway. They're cute."

She trotted past the doe to a nice little patch of flat land, shaking the swampy water out of her fur like a dog before planting her hooves and cocking her fluffy ears at the doe expectantly.

"I suppose you'll be wanting a blessing, then?"

One less thing to worry about, then. Singularity let out a shaky breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding, and nodded dumbly to the question of a blessing. Really, this entire meeting had been unexpected- dogs turning into kin and offering blessings. But then, the swamp worked in mysterious ways. Maybe this was a sign that children were the next stage in her adventure to understand the world.

"If you don't mind."

"Alrighty," she chirped, jogging on her hooves, "any special requests? Health? Happiness? More sense than your mate, that sort of thing? Lots of Kin could use that one."

She did so love giving blessings.

Sorry this took so long! School hates me.

What did she want for her children? She couldn't say. More than anything, Singularity wanted answers for herself. The reason she was here. Someone just as perfect as her. But that wasn't something you said out loud, was it?

"...a life well lived and a life of beauty," she hedged, nodding to herself. Yes, that sounded fair

She stood still for a moment, staring into space as she silently mouthed the words, then nodded, "Good one, good one."

"Oh, Swampmother," she crooned, launching straight into her routine - except the doe was on a bank, so it was more a matter of dancing semi-circles rather than her usual rounds round her, "your swamp daughter, for this flower, does her duty: grant her children, ever after, a life well lived and a life of beauty!"

Caper, twirl, flourish back where she began.

It was nice to know that the legendary approved of her blessing. Singularity watched the peculiar dance, eyes trailing after the strange doe as she went around and around. Despite herself, a smile played upon her lips. When the stranger was finished, Singularity offered her a bow of the head.

"Thank you. Truly, I hope they have lives well lived."

"Well, you know, there're always rebels," she said thoughtfully, dropping to the ground to scritch absently at her fluffy ear with a hind-hoof, "but the Swampmother provides. Well. That's it then. Good luck. You'll be fine - and there's always the Mothers Club otherwise."

She rose and abruptly spun into a pink mantis that hopped onto a tree, launched off the trunk, and flitted away.
