It's because they still incorporate the Union Jack into their flag. Australia and New Zealand do it too, but it's less noticable because they use the same blue whereas Fiji uses almost a sky blue. Most commonwealth countries used similar flags at some point. Here's the history of Canadian flags;



And when you look at provincial flags the Union Jack features prominently in many of them. Manitoba, Ontario and British Columbia use it in their flags and it was the official flag of Newfoundland until 1980. Which makes it so unfortunate that this stamp set came out in 1979;



Had the set come out one year later the stamp would have had the current provincial flag;

I've always loved geography and flags fascinate me. Plus, I live in Newfoundland. lol

Because it is up against some very smexy flags and because white stars are better than red. I actually prefer the New Zealand star shape though. Probably because I remember trying to draw the Aus flag for school and I was like "How the f*** are you meant to draw these bloody stars!" Still fond of the southern cross though. I should invent a hybrid flag and pretend I have my own country xp
