Nighttime arrived swiftly that day, and for that Malnourished was ridiculously grateful. It was annoying enough having to deal with others during daylight hours. At least at night the numbers were fewer, and it was easier to avoid kin that weren’t worth her time (not that any of them were). From the shadows of the swamp she passed through, her head held high and her pink, phosphorescent gaze alert for any potential wickedness. She did so love it, after all.

A sudden crunching noise informed the cruel doe of something she’d stepped on. Glancing down, she took in the sight of what appeared to be the skeletal remains of a mongoose. Ohhh, the poor thing. Adopting a "sad" expression that spoke volumes of false sympathy, she brought up a black hoof and slammed it down, crushing the intact skull until it was nothing more than sad little shards along the ground. If the insufferable creature had been too weak to survive in life, then it certainly didn’t deserve to be around after death.

It was this time that the evening stars were most visible through the canopy of trees, and later in the year, this time when the fairies would be at their brightest.

As it was, though, it was far too early for the little insects to be making their rounds– and that suited Hold the Light just fine. Nature had its cycles, of rest and of growth and of death and of birth, and it was a simple fact of life that some of his favourite things were fleeting. Really, that only made them more precious.

He'd come across an injured swan earlier, with a broken wing and no interest in letting him get close. It had been attacked by something, and it appeared to be flagging, so he'd taken mercy on it earlier and broken its neck, bringing a swift end to what would have otherwise been a painful, lingering fate. It took a little effort to swing its body over his back, and his mouth was occupied by holding it by the neck to keep the unbalanced load from falling, but there it was– a bountiful meal and an act of mercy, at that. Still, this was too much bird for him to eat alone. Perhaps he'd find someone to share this with–

His thoughts were interrupted by a thin, obvious crunching noise. His head swivelled in the direction, and he stepped forward, intent on seeing who– or what– it was.

The sound of movement nearby captured Malnourished’s immediate attention; she peered through the darkened swamp curiously and took a step forward of her own. The doe had wished to avoid other kin entirely during her nightly outing, but if there was one that happened to be in the general vicinity…well, hopefully it was one that wouldn’t annoy her. She had always had very little patience and tolerance for imbeciles, and now was no different.

After a brief interlude of aimless wandering, a buck came into view. He seemed plain enough in his appearance with dark colors and no special embellishments (at least, not like some of the other flamboyantly marked and decorated members of their species). She quickly took notice of the dead swan on his back and couldn’t stop herself from smirking wickedly.

How delightful,” she said, finding a fiendish sort of glee in what she hoped was a murder. “Did you kill it yourself?”

The buck blinked, leaning in and squinting to better make out the dark doe in the darkness. Her legs disappeared, as did her head, leaving only the swath of her torso and her glowing eyes easy to pick out, giving her the rather enchanting illusion that she was floating.

"I did," he replied to her question, tail flicking a little. "It was injured, and it would have been a waste to leave it." It was a shame that such a beautiful creature had to be killed, but such was life!

Well, he'd gone looking for someone to eat with, and here she was, in the flesh, no sooner than he'd really sincerely started thinking about it– he'd be a fool to let this opportunity pass him by when the Motherfather had gone to such lengths to accommodate him. "Would you care to share with me?"

Oh. It had been a mercy killing. How dreadfully dull and horribly disappointing. Malnourished would have left without another word, yet the vocalized offer kept her where she was. She had not yet eaten that evening and sharing a meal would have saved her the trouble of finding something on her own time. Perhaps there was use for the buck after all.

"I suppose so," she answered with utmost nonchalance embracing her words. "I'm not so foolish as to ignore a meal when one is offered to me." Especially since the doe didn't eat every single day.
