“follow the birds”

Caiman bones are new, the dragon thinks as she looks at the cleaned carcass. She lounges in the aftermath of a full belly and no more toy to play with. There is little else to life besides Mother Maleficent. And while she loves Mother, the old broodmare is little fun.

Malevolent needs playmates. Ones that will not die so easily as her meals do, ones that will be less boring as her mother is. And yet that is work she does not know how to go about. She doesn't much care for others nor does she have any thought on what she wants.

Instead, she puffs out a snort of breath and touches her chin to the dirt. Perhaps when she wakes she will feel the need to do. Until then... it's in a dragon's nature to slumber.

Some dragons slept. Some roamed the land, restless, always seeking.

And then there was Grave, who simply wanted to do his duty to the Swamp and be left the hell alone. He was gloriously on his own just then, even his helpers left at a distance to eat, while he followed a flock of birds that cawed and circled not far from where he had set up for the coming night. The sun had not yet begun to descend in earnest, and he would work by the light of the moon if need be.

Diligent, he followed the caws when the boughs were too thick to see through, and kept his eyes skybound when he could see their feathered wreath in the sky, only ignoring them entirely when he found what he was looking for. And something...he was not.

His nostrils flared beneath the skull he wore, blue eyes both annoyed and disinterested for the doe that seemed to be sleeping (or trying to) by his business. Wordless, he plucked up the skull of the caiman between his teeth, and turned into the marshier part of the land, deciding where to bury it.

A shadow fell over her and she felt a shiver of cold run down her spine. It was enough to jolt her from her sleep, see the looming specter that turned from her, and decide to act. That caiman skull was hers and who did this will-o-the-wisp think it was to steal from her? Mother would have hexed him; Malevolent was not so inclined to spells.

The dragon snapped upright, maw opening to let out a warning hiss of malcontent, before teeth clacked shut menacingly. Unlike her Mother who was all drama and show--all the world was a stage and no one had a clue what that doe was--she was all youth and fire. A bellowed roar shot from her vicious mouth as she gathered speed.

She whipped forward, neck stretched out and teeth parted as she snapped to catch the thief's tail.

Before he got far, there was a hiss -- and then a furious bellow at the rear. Great. His company had awak--

And then there were teeth. Around his tail.

Grave came to a complete halt, one hoof up as though to move forward, but frozen in place. His head turned over his withers to regard the onyx female that had latched to the flesh of his tail, blue eyes focusing on the bright splash of red that dribbled around her firm hold.

This. This is why he didn't like the living. What in the MotherFather's name was he supposed to do with this?

"What," he rumbled around the skull still held firmly between clenched teeth, words dripping like the blood that spotted the ground, "are you doing?"

He didn't even flinch. Nor scream. That threw her. What was this strange thing that stole her bones and seemed perturbed by her defense? Certainly not food.

"That's not yours," she growled, teeth still sunk into his tail. If he wasn't letting go of her skull neither was she letting go of his tail. Fair was fair.

Blue eyes pierced and while the blood was nice, there was an acrid note to it that made it less than desirable. Still she was loathed to loosen her grip until he did his. He couldn't expect to just take what he wanted. That was her job; boys were too stupid to be any good at it.

"It's not yours," the words came out a snarl as her teeth clenched, the pain making the tip of his tail flick, the bone spikes narrowly missing her neck. "It's dead and wants to rest, who are you to deny it that?"

It was probably a bad sign when Grave dropped the skull, letting it slam into the ground, putting a hoof in front of it to keep it partially under his body. Grave spoke around a growl, trying to yank his tail out, feeling her teeth drag over the bone of it. "Did it not feed you? Give you another MotherFather-forsaken day on this tepid land? Why would you deny it rest?"

He was just heated enough that he might have been projecting onto the skull. The dead thing. Just a little. His eyes practically blazed with his indignant stance. "What need do you have with it that is important enough to deny it rightful eternal sleep?"

Malevolent blinked, confused. If it wasn't his and if it wasn't hers then what did either of them care about this skull? Tentatively, conflicted, she let go of his tail and felt at a loss. She knew what to do when she was hungry or upset, confusion was rather new.

"Did it tell you this?" she wondered, eventually, head tilting as she tried to eye both him and the skull. It wasn't speaking to her, not anymore, and she had never found much interest in Mother's abilities. Still, he didn't have to be so covert and grouchy. It wasn't her fault the dead ignored her.
