What is a Realm?
A Realm is what the Kitsusagi call their lands. Each Realm is separated from the others - floating in its own pocket of reality. No one knows why the gods originally decided to do this, and likely no one ever will. What matters, is that there is no way to physically travel from one Realm to another. The only way to visit another Realm is through a Gate, or by using other powerful magic usually held only by the gods.
Kitsusagi breeds each have a Home Realm. This is the Realm where they were first created, and is the source of their life force and magical abilities. Kitsusagi may choose to live outside their Home Realm, but they must go back to visit it from time to time in order to replenish their magic and life force. If a Kitsusagi is unable to visit their Home Realm for too long, they will not be able to breed, grow Faded, and eventually die.
Faded? What does that mean??
"Fading" or being "Faded" refers to what happens to a Kitsusagi when they are cut off from their Home Realm for too long. Fading can also occur from other things, such as serious depression - though this is much more rare. The term comes from the way a Kitsusagi appears insubstantial and fleeting when they are Fading. Parts of their body become semi-transparent or disappear altogether and the Kitsu will generally seem sick and distracted, not paying attention to their surroundings. Eventually, if they do not go back to their Home Realm, a Fading Kitsusagi will disappear entirely, not even leaving behind a physical body.
What is a Gate?
A Gate is a magical portal that allows Kitsusagi to step through and instantly travel from one place to another. There are both Lesser and Greater Gates. A Lesser Gate allows travel within the same Realm from one place to another. A Greater Gate allows travel from one Realm to another. There is usually only one Greater Gate in each Realm and any number of Lesser Gates. Greater Gates were created by the gods after they created the Realms. Lesser Gates were later created by Kitsusagi who found a way to mimic the gods' Gates on a less powerful scale.
Which Gates are open?
Right now there is a lesser gate open to the land of cold and home of the Tundras on Athas to the rest of Athas as well as a major Gate connecting the realm of Athas and Torreland
Why do Kitsusagi fade?
Being creatures of magic Kitsusagi are tied to their home realms to help sustain their lives and prevent them from fading away. A Kitsusagi cut off from their home realm will fade in a period of 3-6 years, depending on strength of the individual Kitsusagi. If their home realm is connected through an active Gate, it could be up to around 10 years before effects get really dangerous. As there is a small amount of magic coming through an active gate. It does not take much for a Kitsusagi to recharge to avoid fading. All they have to do is head back to their home realm for a day or two. Those few hybrids born may pull magic form either realm that supports their breed
