Name: Tarroi
Age: 20
Nameday: 3555.08.07
Sex: Male
Sexual Orientation: mostly straight
Craft: N/A, though he does know something about running a sea Hold (if not much about sailing a fishing boat)
Rank: Candidate
Location: High Reaches Weyr
Physical Description: He's fairly good looking; tall and built lean and athletic, with a dark-skinned, nicely chiseled face with full lips and a straight nose that snubs out at the tip. His chin is hidden by a small red-brown goatee, which he has been known to stroke absently. He has a warm, wide smile when he allows it to show; his typical expression these days is serious and all business. Narrow and heavy-lidded, his eyes are a striking, brilliant pale blue in color. His hair is straight and reddish-brown, just brushing the top of his shoulders, with a side part and long unruly fringe poking out over his forehead. Tarroi dresses in shirts and tunics and trousers that are sturdy but well-made. He's a bit of a dandy if the opportunity to dress up presents itself, like at Gathers and Hatching feasts, and will wear the finest outfits he can have made for him.

Personality: Tarroi's upbringing as the son of a fairly wealthy Holder has informed much of his attitudes in life, although the Turns he has spent at High Reaches Weyr as a Candidate have taken quite a bit of the wind out of his sails. Social and outgoing, he is a natural at interpersonal interactions and is great at reading people. He tends to alter how he presents himself depending on the situation and who he's interacting with, even if he's just doling out advice to friends. And does he ever like to dole out advice to friends. He's more than happy to do so whether you ask him for advice or not. He will offer suggestions and ideas for your problems, and most of the time his suggestions and ideas actually make sense. In truth, he just loves to put forth his opinions on things going on in your life and get all up in your business. He just loves to put forth his opinions on anything, really.

Tarroi really does best when he has a certain amount of structure in his life, and that typically comes from being part of a system that has a well-established hierarchy. He can be counted on to play his part to the absolute best of his abilities and assist his wingmates wherever he can. He is very good at taking and following orders once he has figured out the steps he needs to take to accomplish his task and the order in which they are to be done. Multitasking is not his strong suit. Reasonably intelligent, Tarroi actually has more common sense than outright smarts. His native intelligences tend more toward basic problem-solving as opposed to complex thought.

Tarroi is no longer quite as arrogant or cocky as he was when he first arrived at High Reaches, but he still loves to be the center of attention. He has a tendency to hog the conversation and trample other people's words with his own, usually about himself and his triumphs or woes. Tarroi is often his own worst enemy when it comes to his confidence. If he doesn't succeed at something the first time he does it, he's convinced he's a failure and will never get it right. He will berate himself and fall into a bitter self-defeatist funk that only time, patience, and support from his friends and compatriots will bring him out of.

Tarroi hates being challenged, especially when he's in one of his self-defeatist funks. He's not as thin-skinned as he once was, but his nostrils will flare and his words will become clipped and short if he is contradicted. It doesn't matter if the person he's arguing with is wrong or right, either -- his well-formed opinion is being challenged, and he doesn't like that. Tarroi doesn't argue purely for the sake of it; he absolutely hates pure debate because he gets so upset and angry when he's arguing. But he will stand his ground verbally and bite back in an argument.

Positive Trait List sociable and friendly, obedient, adaptable, team player
Negative Trait List a bit arrogant, self-defeatist, self-centered, argumentative

History: The lower-middle son of Toren, a minor and prosperous sea Holder who looked to High Reaches Hold, Tarroi knew from an early age that he was too far down in line to actually inherit the Hold or any of its ships. Still, he was a Holder's son, and being lower in rank than his older brothers wasn't going to stop him from exploiting it. He became something of a cocky, arrogant youth, spoiled by his mother because it's the squeaky wheel that gets the grease. His father was well aware, however, of Tarroi's position in the family hierarchy, and also well aware that if the boy didn't learn some discipline, he'd end up a horrible person. So rather than send him off to learn a craft, he made Tarroi join the military. When a Search rider from High Reaches Weyr came through the Hold shortly after the return of Thread when Tarroi was 15, Toren saw his chance. He told the boy he would outrank his brothers if he became a dragonman, and Tarroi took the bait. He joined the other teens who were likely Candidates and to his father's delight and relief was duly Searched. Tarroi was well pleased with himself — until he got to the Weyr and the reality of life as a Candidate hit home.

Still, there was more structure in the Weyr than there had been at home, and rather than break him, Tarroi actually thrived in it. He proved himself to be a good, well-behaived Candidate who followed orders and direction from the Candidatemaster and whomever he was sent to work under. He has yet to Impress, though, something he considers a great failing. He knows he'll Impress someday — the right dragon just hasn't been shelled yet!

Other: His parents gave him a firelizard egg as a going-away gift, and it hatched into a brown flit he named Klah. He's got Klah trained very well; the little brown delivers messages to whomever Tarroi wants to send one to, and knows to keep quiet during classes and out of the way during chores.
