User ImageWalking side by side with Kameyo, Kagerou happily returned Kameyo's question with her own, "Do you have a preference?". Red eyes glanced over as the question was asked but quickly reverted to watching where Kagerou was going. Good timing, too, as a door was suddenly opened and a hospital bed suddenly pushed right into their path. There wasn't enough time to take much in. There was barely enough time for Kagerou to squeeze into Kameyo. Pushing the smaller woman up against the wall to get both of them out of the way. However, distressed faces were apparent, as were the sounds of urgent voices. The patient was unconscious, but their guest's concerned sounds of alarm mixed with the nurses' and doctor's equally concerned but much calmer instructions and explanations.

Arms on both sides of Kameyo caged in Kagerou's unintended victim, and the perpetrator didn't look like she was going to move anytime soon. In fact, it looked like she hadn't even noticed how familiarly close she was standing to Kameyo. Her focus had completely followed the patient being rushed away, gaze serious with the depth of their concern but a smile still gracing her features. It was a different smile, to Kagerou, but to Kameyo, they probably all looked the same.

Unexpectedly, she seemed to remember Kameyo before long. Eyelids fluttered in reaction to recalling a small detail that needed her attention, and immediately after, her arms lowered. She stopped leaning against the wall and stepped back, releasing Kameyo finally. "Apologies," the kunoichi ambiguously apologized, her green hair waving with the tilt of her head, "Where were we? Yes, I am responsible for the doctors and nurses that work at the hospital. Though, I have never needed to. More than a fair share of the doctors and nurses that work here have taught me in the past. The heads of most departments are actually more skilled than I. Only rarely will I ever confront a doctor or nurse about their practices. Personally, I find it more helpful to discuss with them as colleagues both in search of the best way to help patients. I usually get better results that way."

  • Kagerou's question barely left her lips before Kameyo answered sharply. "Not dementia." Her face fell into some impersonal mask as her mind went elsewhere briefly, though she was brought back to the present as Kagerou pushed her up against the wall. Her first concern was that Kagerou had sensed something dangerous, but she relaxed upon knowing Kagerou would have done more than just move her if there was something serious coming after either of them.

Instead, it was merely a patient being dragged away, and Kameyo briefly considered if Kagerou's natural calm was some kind of psychosis instead of a trained non-reactive reaction. Most people had an immediate emotional response to the sight of an unconscious and hurt person being ushered around, but Kagerou was cool as a cucumber, even maintaining the polite smile. Hell, Kameyo had seen horrible tragedies and even her hearts skipped a beat at the sight.

The green haired woman continued their conversation as if it were nothing. "Hm. Well, take me to a patient in your area of expertise so I can learn from you, as colleagues." Her tone was uncertain as she spoke, still not all-in on the hospital thing but she did want to understand one of Toso's oldest friends better, and Kagerou herself was deceptively interesting and mysterious. At any moment, you thought you had her figured out, or even some small part of her, but then she did something else that brought it under scrutiny. If Kameyo had to do a psych eval of Kagerou, she would drive herself insane with all of the impossible-to-prove assumptions. Did Kagerou fall under any one definition, in any area of her life?

Kameyo tried not to obsess over it, knowing the headache would not prove fruitful. "It would be interesting," she mused aloud, "to one day be able to teach you something. Maybe I should focus on cardiac surgery, knowing I'll have a few fail safes if I really ******** it up." While it was slightly morbid, the thought did make her grin. She wondered if she could convince the other staff to assist her, if they would prefer her monstrous tentacled form to serve as additional hands.

User ImageA raise of an eyebrow at the suddenly quick answer at her question, but no comments were made. Kagerou did not know, but she could guess. She was respectful enough to not pry, at least. Instead, she moved on and focused on answering Kameyo's question.

Her hair bobbing as she nodded in thought, Kagerou briefly closed her red eyes before reopening them to answer, "I generally find myself called in for high risk surgeries. Otherwise, I think I can confidently say that I am the most practiced at implants." Her voice continued to sound pleasing to the ear and comfortably casual, deceptively everyday. Although, perhaps Kameyo, if she was in the know, might have noticed Kagerou's absolute lack of psychiatry in her reply. Psychiatry, the field she poked her nose into the most, was not given in answer to her fields of expertise. It probably wasn't a lie or an omission of truth. Kagerou continued to walk as if nothing was wrong, turning a hallway to take Kameyo to the nearest elevator.

Kagerou continued to talk like nothing was wrong. She figured it would be pretty clear that high risk surgeries weren't something she could just pull out of thin air, so she didn't mention the obvious as she explained, "I don't have any implant appointments lined up today, but I could process the fine tuning of some samples we received the other day. It's mostly lab work, though." She and Kameyo reached the elevators, and as the light blipped and sounds beeped, Kagerou added, "Though, if you would rather like to see me interact with a patient, we could try something else." Kameyo's interest in Kagerou had not escaped the latter's sharp red eyes. The attention felt benign enough, so Kagerou didn't mind helping... to an extent. If it was about what she was like in the hospital, then she would be more than glad to show Kameyo.

  • There was something amusing about Kagerou and high risk surgeries. Kameyo wanted to see the surgeon general in work-mode, to see if she was any less pristine and pulled-together when she was up to her elbows in guts and gore. However, the oddly morbid desire faded as her curiosity was piqued with implants.

"Samples? Like, you hold on to implant DNA? Do we have like, what, a database of them?" It felt odd, picturing a storage room of organ tissue and blood that was used more for showing what each thing was than for storing for actual use - like regular blood collection and storage would be used for. "What kind of samples do you have for the Jiongu?" After the REACH Jiongu robotic accident many years prior, before the war, she had felt a little sour about experiences with clansmen, as far and few between as they were. But, had the village stored the man's DNA? Or worse, his scraps or plans to recreate autonomous bots that mimicked the skills of her blood kin? Her expression hardened at the thought of such perverse betrayal. "I would like to see this implant lab."

User ImageKagerou raised an eye at Kameyo's question on Jiongu implants. Leaving out the part about how this was basic knowledge, Kagerou explained, "Jiongu is among those bloodlines that cannot be implanted, so we do not have any such samples," as she walked into the elevator and, once Kameyo was with her, pressed the proper button. The lack of a key card or any other security measure might be noticeable. Kameyo might also be able to figure out why in Kagerou's next answer, "We have several implant labs. The one we're going to now is where we prepare the biological samples that are scheduled to be implanted in the next few days. Some of them do come from the hospital's collection. A lot of people who come in for implants, however, prefer to bring in their own." Feigning ignorance, Kagerou gave no visible or audible reaction to the hardening of Kameyo's expression. Preferring ignorance as well, she made no attempt to pursue her curiosity over that expression either. She merely noted it, and how Kameyo's face had only changed when she had begun talking about Jiongu implants, but not when she was, most certainly, imagining rooms of various anatomical pickings.

  • Kameyo couldn't school her shocked expression. If it was impossible to implant Jiongu abilities - and if Kagerou said as much, then it was certainly true - then it made no sense why the REACH scientist had been so obsessed... except, of course, that he was simply insane.

But Kagerou had said it so easily. If it was common knowledge, and Kameyo didn't even know it... "There are so many areas of medicine that I have never studied. You will have med students who know more than me about these kinds of things. How embarrassing," she lamented with frustration.

"Wait? We let people bring their own eyes and blood for implantation surgery? Is- is that sterile?" Sure, doctors had techniques to handle bacteria, but that still felt... disgusting, for one thing, and she ripped hearts out of the chests of others and stuffed them in her own. "I mean, I wanna see how the fudge is made but I don't see myself doing these implants. I mean, do we verify that our shinobi didn't just take these samples off a corpse or something?" It was unusual for Kameyo to fixate on the morality of something, though she couldn't help but vent her frustrations about her lack of formal medical knowledge by misdirecting attention onto something else entirely.

User ImageBefore the embarrassment and frustration, she had seemed confused. Kagerou watched the flicker of something like a memory pass through Kameyo's eyes as she tried to resolve new knowledge with old experiences. What that memory could be, even the most basic nature of it, the red eyed doctor could not fathom. However, what was clear to her was that Kameyo, even if she did not doubt her information, had come across something that stood against it.

Hearing Kameyo's lament, Kagerou wanted to raise her morale, uplift her mood. As the two waited in the elevator that slid smoothly down, Kagerou encouraged, "It is good to be humble, Miss Kameyo. I can't tell you how many of the medical shinobis who walk through those doors think they're better than the seasoned doctors at first, those who focus their entire days on pursuing the medical arts. However, we ninja trained folks do have our own skills and tools to offer: practical experience and the utility of chakra. I think combining the two is the key to take what is impossible today and make it possible in the future. That is why I find it important to bring in medical specialists from all sorts of backgrounds, civilians and shinobi. Who knows, maybe one day, it will be possible to implant the Jiongu bloodline."

"But hrmm..." Kagerou closed her eyes and creased her face into a little frown. Holding her chin with one hand, she added, "I don't think it will be something to pursue here." Her eyes reopened and the smile returned. Lowering her hand, she admitted, "No matter how I see it, it would be too risky, inhumane, to attempt such a thing."

Right on cue, the elevator stopped just as Kagerou finished and the doors slid open with a soft mechanical whine. Kagerou turned to the opening door and took the liberties of stepping out of it first. Since there was much explaining to do, she went on talking as she walked. This time, addressing the actual question Kameyo had asked, "Long story short, about the allowing implantees to bring in their own implants, yes. We do allow them to. To explain in a little more detail, it is because it's a matter of convenience--we might not have a certain implant available--and sentiment--some people prefer their abilities earned through their own sweat and blood. Your concerns on the safety of these implants is valid, however, which is where the processing comes in, and ah... Generally speaking, implants that come from a corpse, assuming you mean the long dead sort, are rather easy to identify and usually rejected due to quality issues. Any follow up with the shinobi after that is decided on a case-by-case basis." Though her footsteps were silent, bells rang merrily with each step that bobbed the short cut of green hair, and as she finished talking, Kagerou tossed a glance of red eyes over her shoulder at the Jiongu that was presumably still following her. It was a silent but welcoming look, wordlessly encouraging Kameyo to ask any questions she might have.
