tabAfter what felt like hours of sparring, Mia was finally starting to get tired. The girl threw a round kick out at her sparring partner and mother, Zakaki Takatsuki. The woman blocked it with her forearm before twisting her hand to reach down and grab the Genin by the leg! The Jonin let out a roar of effort and whipped her arms over her head and tossed Mina high up into the air! Mina always knew her mother had monster strength, but it really seemed like she was going all out this time! Mina flipped while she flew but fumbled the landing! The Genin landed incorrectly and had to hop back just to keep from falling over. “You’re open!” Zakaki exclaimed sternly, rushing forward with a straight punch as fast as she could. The Jonin moved in a blur of motion, and Mina only had seconds to react! The Genin’s body moved on its own, using its lack of balance to pivot to the inside of the woman’s fist. Mina, now with her back pressed against her mother, gripped her wrist with one hand and pressed under the arm with the flat of her other palm. Mina stomped her foot on the ground to solidify her footing before lifting with all of her might! The girl swung her mother in an arc over her body! The resulting slam created a small crater in the training grounds, the impact of the Jonin kicking up a large cloud of smoke that rose over the treetops.
When it cleared, Mina hunched over her adoptive mother with her knee pressed into the woman’s chest. The Genin held a hand out and focused her chakra, creating a crackling mixture of flame and lightning. “Set, match, Ma.” She said with a fully confident smile on her face. Zakaki, who was staring straight up in a moment of shock, had her face soften to a proud smile. That was before the entire body went up in a poof of smoke! Mina, who had been putting all of her weight onto her knee, fell forward and hit the ground. When she picked herself back up from the dirt, Mina could hear clapping coming from just a few hundred feet away.
“Not bad sunshine!” Zakaki beamed at her daughter from a safe distance, applauding her efforts against the clone. “But ya tunnel focus too much! You gotta pay attention to what’s going on around you too, hun. Especially when you use that one jutsu… the uhhhh…” The woman paused and looked up with her one uncovered eye, thoughtfully tapping her chin with her finger. “She-dorky…?”
“It’s Chidori, Ma!” Mina yelled, throwing her fists to her side in exasperation. “I just showed it to you last week!”
As Mina spoke, Zakaki walked over to her daughter. “Yeah that’s the one,” she said distractedly, as if she wasn’t really listening. “The She-Dorky.” Her lips split into a wide grin as she pressed her hand against MIna’s head and ruffled her hair. “C’mon kiddo, let’s go. The festival probably started already, and we should have some fun before the Exams tomorrow.” Mina’s face lit up like a firework at the mention of the festival and the young girl bounded forward eagerly with her mom in tow. The training grounds were already starting to get dark as the sun started to go down and the streetlights that lit the way back to the village buzzed to life.
Mina grew up knowing that Zakaki wasn’t her biological mother. While the circumstances always escaped her, Mina had never questioned it too hard. The Jonin took care of her like any mom would, and that certainly was enough for the young girl. Mina had brought it up a couple of times, asking about her parents, to which Zakaki would reply simply that both parents were gone. At first the Genin hadn’t been satisfied with that answer but, as the years went by, Mina came to relent on the questions. Zakaki clearly loved her like her own so Mina never really had the yearning to know her old family. It seemed like since as long as Mina could remember, it was the two of them against the world. But there hadn’t been a single problem Mina had had that Zakaki hadn’t been able to help. Mina’s exams were tomorrow, and the girl had been as nervous as a young girl could be. But, now, as her and her mom walked through Konoha, the girl felt all of her worries melt away. They spent hours playing games, eating overpriced food, and generally enjoying some of the street shows.
The sky was fully dark now, lit up with tiny but glistening stars despite the many lights in the Village. Mina and her mother finally sat down to rest on Hokage Hill, sitting on one of the rocks and looking down at their home. “Hey remember last time the Exams were held?” Zakaki asked as they went back to town. “And the festival back then, too? And how that boy back then thought he could trick you into a kiss with some made up story involving some type of leaves!” Mina grumbled something and blushed, pouting off to the side. That only made her mom laugh more and wrap her arm around her daughter’s shoulders and pulling her in. “And what’d you do, sunshine?”
“I punched him…” Mina grumbled.
“You punched him! So hard we went flying across the street!” Zakaki roared with laughter. It filled Mina with a familiar warmth that eased her embarrassment enough to make her start to laugh too. “And you were so scared that you were gonna get in trouble! But what did I tell you?”
“You said that men’re pigs and that when the right someone comes around, I’ll know.” Mina answered, leaning into her mom and resting her head on the woman’s shoulder.
