It was so weird to suddenly not be fighting anymore. He felt all of the anger and resentment and residual injustice fade away as Keiko became herself, briefly. She had always been a real firecracker, but now she was rendered so peaceful and diplomatic. He was frozen in place as she began to fade away and placed a kiss on his cheek. It seemed to take far too long for him to understand her words - by the time they really hit him, she had already turned to dust. "What? That... that can't be it. Wait. Wait, please!" There was so much to say and mend and ask. He looked at his hands as the last pieces of dust flew from them, completely lost to the wind.
There were already tears falling from his eyes when he caught the winded Akaran. Akihiko bent his head over the oni as he collapsed to his knees, clutching his husband tight. He couldn't answer Akaran's question as he sobbed against Akaran's neck.

As they embraced for a while, Akaran felt the adrenaline coming down and the consequences of opening the seventh gate along with it. His entire body was in writhing pain beyond the dull ache of soreness from typical bodily exertion. Even Aki touching him caused him to wince in pain due to the deep muscle fractures that he experienced. His body was spent and pushed to the limit as he spoke up. "That was gate seven....hoo. I should go to the hospital." Akaran was beginning to feel terrible as he squeezed those words out while Aki held him.

Akihiko's sobs softened against Akaran by the time the oni confessed he was in pain. "Yes, let's get you to a hospital," Akihiko said, pulling himself together. He had to protect Akaran like he protected Hikaru. He didn't know what he'd do if something happened to either of them, especially something as heinous as the edo tensei technique. "I'll carry you," Akihiko said earnestly as he lifted his husband as gently as possible. The exertion took his mind off of the events of the day, though he desperately wanted to drown all of his sorrows with a bottle of whatever he could get his hands on.

▱▰▱It was weird for Akaran to see Akihiko cry or be so vulnerable like that. It was hard for him to watch on top of his physical pain. The pain from opening the seventh gate was almost numbed in comparison to his heartbreak seeing what Aki was going through. When Aki started carrying him across the White Forest, along the road, and back to the Zaishin Kampo Clinic, his face was flushed almost the whole way through. The extent to which Aki supported him was deeply touching. He would spend some time recuperating in the hospital with Aki in a chair next to his IV. He reached a hand out to grab Aki's hand as he smiled supportedly with a still-concerned expression. "Do you wanna talk about what happened in the forest?" Akaran asked his husband as he was unsure if he wanted to get it off his chest and debrief or just keep his feelings repressed for now.

Akihiko's gaze rested on the window outside as he held Akaran's hand. He was glad that there was no hassle with him being with Akaran in the hospital room like there'd been at that religious hospital shitshow. He rubbed his thumb against Akaran's wedding ring as he thought through his question. "There's nothing to talk about," Akihiko said as his shoulders dropped. "Something in the past has finally been put to rest." His face was painfully blank as he looked from the window to Akaran. "I don't know what to tell Hikaru. There's nothing to say, I think. Nothing to gain. His dead mother was brought back for a few moments of agony... I don't think he should know." But he paused, expecting some kind of advice from Akaran, some kind of confirmation that he was right about this.

▱▰▱Akaran nodded emphatically to his judgment on the matter of Hikaru. The oni always believed in honesty but there were times when it was better for someone to just leave it be. "You're right, I don't think we should put Hi-ka-ru through that." In Akaran's view, the boy had been through enough trauma in his life. This story would just trip him up while he is trying to recover his life and identity as a young man. To impede his progress would just be wrong. Akaran rubbed his thumb on Aki's hand just to reassure him. "You're a good dad and I know you'll be there for him no matter what." The swordless samurai knew just what to say and he truly meant it. He wanted to rebuild Akihiko after he was torn down by the harsh hypnotized words of his former partner. "I don't think she meant any of that mean stuff. I think that woman was making her say those things. You're right to move on though, A-ki-hi-ko." Akaran gently raised his other hand to rest on his husband's soft cheek and smiled reassuringly.
▱▰▱Akaran looked up at the ceiling and a worried expression crossed his face as he lowered his hand from Aki's face. "I just feel like...things are really bad right now. In the world. We've had it tough before. UHV, Ko-ga-ra-shi, that s**t with the Shogun, it was all bad. But at least it felt like there was hope. That it would be over and things would get better. Right now there's nothing but falling apart. These Jashinists, I think they just want to end it all. What do you think?" He then looked at Aki for comfort as he worried about the future. Akaran tried to keep hope but dread just kept tugging at him. Today's mission felt like the ultimate culmination of all of the challenges and misery that the pair had to face together and it was becoming too much to bear.

Akaran's opinion was as good as a sage's advice to the uncertain Akihiko. His worried eyes softened as Akaran insisted he was a good dad, teasing a smile from Akihiko's lips. "Thank you, Akaguya. I... I want to believe she would never say those things. But. There may be some truth to them, regardless." He listened intently as Akaran listed some of the global evils that have shake the shinobi world, and it did, somehow, make him less anxious. How badly could he personally ******** up in a world like this?
"I think it's... I think it's par for the course. Aren't we always going to be like this? Ruled by our vices? The more the world changes and gets complicated, the more it stays the same. I think there's nothing we can do to stop it. Someone will always be just powerful enough, just hungry enough, to punish everyone else around them." He scowled as he thought about it, tapping his fingers on Akaran's arm as he rested in the hospital bed. He wanted a cigarette. He wanted a drink.
He wanted to be home with Hikaru to protect him from everything in the world.
"I can't wait to get home. I don't mind the boring so much, if this is the alternative."

▱▰▱Akaran's heart still hurt over Akihiko's difficulties with Hikaru's mom. He only hoped that he could find some peace with the matter. He sighed and stared at the ceiling as Akihiko chimed in. "You might be right. We keep running into the same problems. But I think people like us can make a difference. Love in this hateful world will get us far, A-ki-hi-ko." Akaran spoke with hope as he reflected on all the good that they had already done together. The mention of home did make him smile as he let Aki's hand go and slowly sat up in the bed. "Let's go home then. Hi-ka-ru's favorite are those dumplings, right? Let's pick those up." Akaran was soon discharged from the hospital albeit incredibly sore all over. They would walk home and return gladly to the simple life.
