Fifth Year's Defense Against the Dark Arts class is held at 9:00am on Mondays and Wednesdays Located on Hogwarts' third floor is the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom. The room is bright with the curtains of the large windows always open. The windows themselves will sometimes be open depending on the weather. The classroom is light on decor, Professor Monroe preferring to have as much open space as possible. However there are a few mementos including his diploma, a few vintage newspapers, and even an American flag hanging tucked in one of the corners. At the head of the classroom there is a desk, though Professor Monroe rarely sits and when he does it's usually on top of the desk. Next to the desk is a chalkboard he uses while teaching. Off to the side there is another smaller chalkboard with the word Rules underlined. There is only one thing beneath it; "I trust you, just don't be an idiot."Professor Monroe's office is situated above the classroom and is almost always open in case students need anything.

Jack galloped down the stairs from his office and down into the classroom. It was a few minutes before 9:00, and his fifth-years would soon be trailing in. He walked down the length of the classroom, flicking his wand every few feet causing the curtains on each window to fly open. He always wanted as much light in the classroom as he could get. He'd done everything he could to make his room as open, airy, and bright as possible. In his experience, students performed better when it was light.
Once everything was open and organized Jack moved back toward the front of the classroom and to the chalkboard. In large letters that would be visible to the whole class he wrote the word "Protego". He began to write more words underneath as his fifth-year students began to enter the room. He was greeted by a, "Hey Uncle Jack!"
"Hey kid," he replied, turning from the board and spotting Charlotte. He finished up his list and placed the chalk down. He leaned back against the desk and watched the kids file in.
Once Jack felt like everyone had arrived he stood and gave a clap. "Alright, everyone! Today we're covering what I think is the most important spell you'll ever learn in this class. Protego; the shield charm. It could easily be the difference between life and death." He'd seen it firsthand. "Now, we're just starting with the basics today but I did want to point out the different variations of the spell." He motioned to the list on the board and read out, "Protego Duo, Protego Horribilis, Protego Maxim, Protego Totalum, and Protego Diabolica. Each is a different power level and/or configuration. Except Diabolica. You don't want to mess with that one. Trust me."
He then pulled out his wand. "It's a simple movement, just a line up and down." He quickly demonstrated. "I'll have you guys group off and practice, but first I'll do a demonstration. Charlotte!" One advantage to having family in his class was that it gave him someone to pick on. "Stand up and give it a try." After the girl had a moment to prepare herself he pointed his wand toward her. "Rictusempra!"

════════════════════════ Charlotte strode into the classroom with a smile. Defense Against the Dark Arts was one of her favorite classes, mostly because Uncle Jack was teaching. There were certain advantages to be related to the professor. Never unfair ones, but when you already spoke to the teacher on a regular basis help was easy to come by. As usual, she was the first in the room. "Hey, Uncle Jack!" She said as she made her way to her desk.
She sat down, carefully placed her wand on her desk, and crossed her ankles. Once Jack started talking, she listened carefully. She was focused, but admittedly, she was still a bit startled when Jack called her name. However, she obliged and stood up. She readied his wand and, with a deep breath, called out, "Protego," with a downward swish of her wand.
Half a second later Jack let out a spell of his own. There was a moment of impact and the shield in front of her seemed to light up and become visible. Her heart soared. She'd done it. Unfortunately, she celebrated too soon. Suddenly the spell burst through and straight into her. Charlotte doubled over in laughter as the tickling charm went over her whole body. Even through the tickling Charlotte couldn't help but notice a small smile that crept onto Jack's face. She then heard Jack say, "Finite Incantatem," and the tickling stopped.
"Alright, let's do it," Jack said, motioning the kids to get into groups.
