I'm not so sure how it is in other countries, but here in Australia most graphic design and web design jobs are advertised and found through word of mouth. There are still some jobs advertised in the newspaper or employment websites, but there are obvious advantages in knowing the right people.
So tell us, what are your experiences with networking and connections in relation to graphic design? Has it helped you gain jobs or clients or further connections? How did you meet these people, and do you have any advice for other people to help build up and maintain their network of people?
Sometimes who you know is just as important as what you know. Thats not to say that hard work is wasted, but it can't hurt to know some of the people who are 'up there' right?

in Michigan USA, jobs are somtimes offered by word of mouth, and rarely by ads. For the most part you need to go into the agency or firm and give them something to highlight your work and hope they get back to you. In a way its netowkring, but on a less persoanl scale. if a job is offered in the ads, they are normaly looking for someone with no skills that they can hire for min. wage and have them work out of powerpoint or publisher.
