My favorite is AntiCraft: Knitting, Stitching and Beading for the Slightly Sinister.

not only does it have some amazing projects, recipes, history of crafting, and humor, but the website is amazing too! AntiCraft Site

for knitters, I'd have to say anything by Elizabeth Zimmerman!

Charmed Knits by Alison Hansel. Primarily because I do a lot of Harry Potter themed knitting, this book is my crafting bible.

Also, The Readers Digest Complete Guide to Needlework is quite the handy book of reference when you need a crash course on just about anything to do with needlework. 'Tis a lifesaver. Haven't a clue if its still in print as the copy I have is copyright 1979 and was filched from my grandmother's collection of crafting tomes.

I bought my first sewing book at Barnes and Noble and it's such an easy-to-read book that I'd recommend it to anyone learning how to sew handbags.

Sew Easy: Handbags by Linda Lee. It comes with twelve cards that have full, easy-to-read instructions that I could actually understand! Plus, it leaves room for you to be able to tweak the designs and make them all your own. 3nodding

The Big a** Book of Crafts
is my current favourite, because it's full of crafts (over 100) that I would love to have in my home. Plus, the guy is a little weird. One of the crafts is for a Baby Head Paper Weight, and the caption for it is "Your friends will think you're weird for making this, but that's ok."

I've seen dominknitrix, and it looks really interesting. Of course, the best beginner guides (imho) are the Stitchn'b***h books, and The Happy Hooker.
