Tearin' the Church apart... one day at a time.

Poor John Paul II is rolling over in his grave. cry

Egh.

I actually liked John Paul II, in a way.

This guy's just... Egh. All the zeal, half as open a heart.

I admired John Paul II. He was a pretty good guy and rather open. However, Ratzinger is a complete a**.

Pope John Paul the second? The dude who said that it was against doctrine to use birth control?

I'm sure the infected lovers and starving children of the world are very glad their partners or parents followed that religious ruling.

Ruh roh, one bad policy move, let's crucify the man.

Oh wait, that's right, you can't because he's dead.

If he said "I hate my black next door neighbor" it could be poo-pooed as a clumsy faux-pas.

I think this had pretty far-reaching implications in that a man who was able to make a huge change for the better instead impacted at least an entire generation in a way that many feel is highly detrimental.

Plus the rejection of female priests, plus the declaration of India as a godless country plus the admiration for violent rightist forces.

I'm not hating him for being a pope or a Christian or whatever. I do stupid s**t and place my allegiances poorly on occasion as everyone does, but I just don't like people being avoiding valid criticisms.

Besides, I'm sure there's plenty about Dawkins and Darwin and Hawking that'd be pretty damning, too.

Okay, so he was still a religious nut. But at least he tried to unite people rather than divide.

He did some dumbass things, but he was a gazillion times better for the Catholic Church than Hitler Pope.

Also, BREAKING NEWS. My hatred grows. evil

Ya, John Paul II was a douche. Like that time he invited a bunch of the best scientists in the world to try and keep the Church informed on scientific matters. Or that time he declared evolutionary theory was acceptable. Or that time he helped bring down communism in Poland.

I never once claimed he was a saint or a devil. BVTP, calm down.

I just get uncomfortable when people use a human's name to parallel a universal ideology or behavior, as people do with Ghandi, Princess Diana or Mother Teresa.

I just wanted to provide a different viewpoint and had no intention to defend or decry anyone in particular.

;;;<_<

And yes, I think Ratzinger is a bad, bad dude with a strangely militiristic agenda.

I wasn't, I was merely showing how extraordinary of a man he was. I don't think being objective in this case means showing him as an equally good and bad individual.

Ratzinger's appearence frightened me when I first saw him. And now I have a reason to hate him, and I won't be considered shallow.
