Okay, I've seen a lot of people around Gaia saying that atheism is the "cool new thing" amongst the kiddies. I gave the topic the benefit of the doubt, and I took a look around at some of the atheists on Gaia and Youtube. I skipped the more popular atheists and searched up some of the people who did the Blasphemy Challenge a while back. There were some 20-somethings with devil-may-care grins as they denied the Holy Spirit, adult skeptics doing the Challenge just as a formality, and then... the teenagers.

One video involved a fifteen year old girl and her friend (both looking fairly gothic/emo) denying the Holy Spirit. The first girl claimed that she had done "A lot of research and thinking" before deciding to become atheist at... here's the punchline... age thirteen. Somehow, that age made me question her use of "a lot".

After this and a few less memorable videos, I conceded that there were plenty of teenagers out there wanting to rebel and found their outlet through religion. However, there was still one other implied statement I didn't address when it came to athiesm being "a new fad"- It sounds like some people think athiesm is a new or different thing.

Has there been a new wave of athiests these past few years?
Has current history spurred people into losing faith?
Did The God Delusion play as big a part in new atheism as believed?
And finally, is today's atheist a product of counterculture?

Mhmm. There are too many of us who just embrace atheism to rebel, or to justify immaturely hating religion. It's they that keep us from living with any kind of peace, and I do not care for them in the least.

If this is a fad it's a very bad one because Very little people that I know are atheist.

Also Join the Renouce the Blasphemy Challenge Challenge.

That's annoying. I find different ways to rebel....I don't need to be something I'm not. My fashion sense is enough to scare most people and send them away in disgust.

I don't consider atheism - at least not atheism in its true form - a manner of dissent. That's why I hate people like these teenagers who become "atheists" simply to be contradictory. It's the new "I'm gonna buy a Metallica album and you can't stop me!" attitude, and it's disgusting to think of atheism as a simple conduit for rebellion.

Atheism, a fad?

Yes, I may only be thirteen.
But, I was raised in a family that claimed to be Christians.
I myself have been in enough debates about religion and such to know what I am.
I was raised by adults.
Having no siblings even remotely close to my age.
I've been to almost all of the churches that allow visitors.
Just to see what the talk about.

I'm not gothic, or emo.
I follow no sterotypes.

I dress in bright colors and speak my mind.
I don't listen to depressing music or write hateful poetry.

I just find it more logical to believe in other things.
And I've already laid of my life.

I love science.
I carry an A, which is the highest grade in our school system.
I love to read books about the universe.
And sometimes, I puzzle the teachers with questions about the universe.
I love to hear stories about the past, and I find the bible more non-fiction than anything.

My friend is a Catholic, she lets me read her bible when ever I ask.
It's interesting to read about what they thought about Jesus and such.

Saying that it's a fad, is a little much.
To some kids it may be.
Put say it is to all of the teenagers, that's down right rude.

I am the only one of my type in my school.
I didn't realize that untill a couple kids asked me about my views.
I had to explain to them.
Honestly.

Sometimes a cigar...

...is just a cigar.

Okay, okay, don't get your text alignments all centered, I didn't mean much by it. I just hate teenagers. I hated teenagers when I was one. I just find it surprising with all of those hormones swirling in them that they can even think straight, much less deeply examine themselves and the spiritual and social repercussions of choosing atheism over their eternal soul.

I'm a teenager and I agree with you most teenagers are so..... I can find words to describe most of them.Stupid, annoying, arrogant, self-centered pricks." Deep breath" much better.
Also are you atheist ?

I am, I just wanted to examine the other side of the arguement. It would be detestable if I was a close-minded atheist.

Well, the male teacher started talking about the universe.
I made a point to ask him about life on other planets.

He gave a simple answer and moved on.

I later interuppted him and asked him if we had free will.
He didn't know what to say.

I'm glad you put most.
Some forget that not all teenagers are like that.

Avoir Le Retour...
Well, I'm 13, and I have done a lot of research. I'm not an atheist because it's cool, because trust me, with most of the people I come into contact with on a daily basis, it's not. I'm atheist, because I simply do not believe in God, and have good reason.

Okay. But what do you think about atheism as a fad?
