Well, the first thing youll need is a high speed connection. (it CAN work with Dialup, but is highly unstable and not reccommend)
if you have highspeed internet, you can ether get the nintendo usb adaptor (not recommended. never would work for me) or a wireless router. (nintendos wifi site, nintendowifi.com i think mentioneds a few compatible brands. i myself use a linksys one)
Then you just set it up in game, and your good to go. (example, in pkmn diamond or pearl, go to WFC setting son the main menu, then seach for acess point if you are using a router, or hit connect to usb device if you are using that.)
(side note, the router, i believe will only work with Broadband. if you have Dialup, and theres no way to get cable or Dsl, your only option if you think its worth it, is to by that Nintendo USB adaptor, and try to set up internet connection sharing. im sure the web has more avalible info on it. i got it to work with aol before i had cable...but it didnt last long at all. worked for a full 3 hours.)
