Preventing ear explotions?

Yes. I have two 10millimeter holes in my ears and I've started thinking...
How to prevent ear explotions?
My fear is mostly because of pictures I've seen online. I don't want my ears to end up like that.
Is it just that I have to remember to keep them clean and let them breathe every now and then or are there any other tips?

I have a couple of suggestions:

1) Don't stretch too quickly (too often or skipping sizes)
2) Use copious lube when stretching to prevent tears
3) Downsize every once in a while if your ears are getting annoyed or you want to keep up the elasticity.
