January.

[Tak-Jak]

We climb out onto porches
clutching
our tea-stained mugs,
asking for anything resembling
our historic January.
The one where:
Week One we start fresh,
Week Two we bury ourselves in white,
and by Week Three forget
our previously declared resolutions.
(Week Four never registers
as its always spent preparing
for another month;
another storm.)

The tables shakes
to the sound of bowling alleys
whenever we shift our body weight.
A chorus of left to right,
or right to left;
trying to find the Middle Way.

The cats have forgotten about us
as they tuck themselves into
pillowcases,
radiators,
or anything promising warmth.

And so we sink into moonlight,
having forgotten the ways of the sun,
and mutter to ourselves
since the piercing air halted
our conversation.

We have reduced ourselves
to burning candles,
hearty silences,
and ticking clocks.

I long for March
and its promise to release us
from Persephone’s embrace.

Yeah, I tend to forget about my New Years resolutions... I didn't even make any this year xd They wouldn't happen.

Yes, winter is quite lovely. Alas.. it is all I remember.
For now I am in Florida, where it was 80 degrees on Christmas morn.

We finally have a cold front. Frost is expected...
How exciting.. Waking up to dead plants.. and grumpy neighbors.

But January...is a bit cold and miserable, really, aside from that. Nothing to look forward to...summer's too far away.
