I know some of you know him. But really to me, he was the greatest composer in his time. No one came close to perfection like Mahler (imo).

Most people have heard his 2nd, 5th, and 8th symphonies if they've heard any of his pieces at all, but I highly suggest to listen to all his symphonies. There isn't a piece of his that I've ever hated to death (or at all really).

If you like fast music, then I suggest the final mvnt.s from his 1st, 2nd, 6th, and 7th symphonies.

If you like slow music, then I suggest the first mvnt. of the 9th and 3rd mvnt. of the 6th.

If you just like an awesome music experience, then the 2nd mvnt. of the 5th symphony and the 1st and 3rd mvnt.s of his 2nd symphony.

I really love his first symphony, actually. I played it with the community orchestra I'm in and it was really an amazing experience. (All the little old classical music enthusiasts practically jumped out of their seats at the beginning of the fourth movement!) ... and I loveeee the part where the violas come in all sexy-like about 7 minutes into the 4th movement!
Besides that, though, I need to brush up on my Mahler - I haven't done much listening to his other symphonies (but I checked out a CD from the library a couple days ago, yay!)

+ 4th mvt. of 5th symphony <3

If you like vocal music, try his Kindertotenlieder or Das Lied von der Erde.

I think I'll listen to them, I haven't heard any of his pieces yet.

I didn't put it up there since I never found it to be an exceptional Mahler piece, but it is pretty good. Anybody who likes Brahms or Dvorak would love it.

Also, I like Kinder, but DLVDE is awesome.

You guys know how it can be a pain in the butt to number all your measures? Well imagine numbering all of Mahler's 8th symphony >< The second mvnt. alone is 1572 meausres long!

Also for the first symphony try this.

I think I'm ready to give Mahler another chance. His works are just so big, it's hard for me to get my head around them. Obviously, the more I listen, the easier it will get, but they're such a time commitment that it's difficult for me to do...

For slow music, as you've mention, I just wanna give a shout-out to Mvmt 4 of Mahler's 3rd Symphony... Omg, chills and tears ftw!

I came to Mahler by a compliment of a colleague. He told me that my beloved instrument (Euphonium/ Baritone) is used in Mahlers 7th. Symphony and also in Holsts Planets.

Das Lied von der Erde is really great...

I think, I know now what I'll do this weekend.

Mahler is also my favorite composer. You should do some research on his life. He had a terrible life. He was one of 14 children, but I think only 7 survived. One of his 13 yr old brothers died that he was really close to. Another one of his brothers shot himself. His mother and father died early in his lifetime. He had two children, and Putzi, one of the girls died, then he lost his job and moved to America. He had a heart condition. He was Bi-Polar, I think. There were more people that died but I can't remember. cry Add on top of all this the fact that he always felt unwanted because he was a Bohemian and a Jew. I believer his toughest year was 1903. His life was rough. He made some pretty powerful music out of all of this. smile

Echenbach holds the best youtube performances of Mahler for sure.

I'm not sure why, but the things Mahler has such as the 3rd mvnt. to the first symphony don't really suit my taste. They're excellent, but they feel to classical. Maybe there just hasn't been a good version yet?

See:

Ending of 6th symphony
Ending of 1st symphony

Those aren't the final mvnt.s, but the end of the whole symphony.

I love Mahler's creativity; he's one of my favorite composers (anyone's favorite, really). I remember him mostly for not only his expressive works, but his use of the effect of creeping, whispering, muted trumpets. O:
