Preserving gummi bears with verithane? [help!]

I found a very cute picture today--whilst staring at its pure adorable-ness, I noticed that one of the characters in it was wearing a gummi bear bracelet.

Me, being an insane crafter, immediately wanted to make one of my own.

So, I was wondering how to preserve the gummi bears, as to not let them be sticky and blah =P

I asked my mom what she thought ((because, oddly enough, I've never done anything that would need this treatment)), and she said that verithane ((sp?)) would work. Or so she thinks.

I Googled it. Found nothing of helpfullness. So I figured that someone here must know something about it.

So... What is verithane? Does it harden the object at all? How long does it take to dry? Is my idea plausible?

And, if anyone has any other ideas for the gummi bracelets, I would love to hear them.

If you have the all natural gummy bears, with no preservatives, they will naturally fossilize after awhile. I've been attempting to eat 8 month old gummy bears with little luck, for a couple of days. They've been stored away in an airtight container but yeah.. they're stiff and hard to chew.

You probably don't want to wait that long though. o_o Best of luck.

I would try drying them out a few different ways (open air, direct sun exposure, low-temp oven, food dehydrater if you've got one) and see how they hold up for starters. If any of them are still in usable shape, prepare a batch that way, add a hole/eyelet of some sort for cord, then coat them with shellac, epoxy or clear nail polish.

But that's all guess work. I've honestly never tried to make beads out of gummy bears.

i would probably make the gummi bear shape out of glass or some other material so that you dont have to find a way to preserve them. good luck!

I don't know anything about verithane, but I do know that people make candy into jewelry by sealing it in resin.

There was someone a few years back that made necklaces out of marshmallow peeps, so it must be possible to preserve candy into jewelry. I'm not sure how though.

i saw somewhere that they said they consealed their gummy bears with varnish..
