There's just so much to discuss about this remarkable composer. So, what are everyone's favourite Mozart works? Mine are:

1. Clarinet Concerto
2. Piano Concerto no. 20
3. Piano Sonata no. 17 (K 570)
4. Die Zauberflöte
5. Oboe Concerto
6. Don Giovanni
7. Piano Concerto no. 13
8. Cosi fan tutte
9. Clarinet Quintet
10. Piano Concerto no. 24

I like his Eine Kleine Nactmusick. It's pretty fun to play if you play the original version.

I can NOT stand Mozart. xp I'm sorry, I'm not sure what it is about him... I just listen to his work and feel... nothing. The absense of any feeling. I try and I try... I just can't get any feeling across. I can't feel. Which scares me because I use classical music to feel things.

I don't know, it probably doen'st make any sense. I tried explaning it to my jazz teacher once, and he looked at me like I was insane. Mayb eI just am. whee

Well, I can't relate. I always find Mozart quite emotional - just that the emotion isn't as in-your-face as in, say, Mahler. Try the 2nd Movement of the 23rd Piano Concerto. No one can listen to that and not be moved.

Mozart was a genius we can all agree to that. However, in my personal opinion some (not all) of his songs lack some emotion. There are a lot of his songs I do like a lot. There are a lot that all just sound the same to me and dont have as much emotion. Maybe its because he was getting paid to write music for deadlines or something he wasnt putting as much emotion into it.

I dunno. Thats just my opinion, everyone takes music differently. I do believe Mozart was an amazing composer. I've been to Salzburg and seen his little museum thing and everything. It was so cool.

Man is condemned to be free. ~Jean-Paul Sartre

That would be amazing, `Kel` - about going to Salzburg.

Mozart's music is endlessly interesting to me; I like a lot of it, and I don't like a lot of it. He was so prolific that it's almost inevitable some of his music will be less-than-extraordinary. He was still a musical genius and someone to be highly respected for defining a lot of the classical period. Even so, it's understandable that some find it lacking in emotion, because, well, some of it doesn't have a lot of emotion, at least not at the surface.

However, I'd be wary of passing too much judgement (to any conclusion) seeing as Mozart was so incredibly prolific. I can't claim to have heard an exhaustive example of Mozart's work, so I certainly won't pass judgement.

Well, if you take into account the period, you can't expect Mozart to be groaning with tragic cello melodies and roaring with huge, passionate outburts. He was classical period. Also, I find a gentle Andante movement, in a major key, by Mozart endlessly more emotional than a hugely orchestrated, minor key, Mahler Symphony. It's all a matter of opinion.

Also, most composers wrote commissions for rich people. They had to make money some way.

I, personally, don't think I've ever heard a less than extraordinary piece of Mozart. He was remarkable in that he produced such a huge quantity of flawless music.

I don't.

Not to be snide, but what precisely makes him so much more "genius" than C.P.E. Bach or Muzio Clementi? I've never gotten a concise answer to that, it's like trying to argue with rock/pop people that the Beatles weren't God's gift to music; bewilders me.

heart ... Autumn leaves fall and are swept out of sight ...

I don't have much of an opinion on Mozart; I suppose for me he was just someone else in the music collection that got played to death as I was growing up. My vocal teacher at the Con. said that I like Mozart. O}_o Possibly due to the fact that the pieces I've been able to breeze through have been his; Soave sia il vento, Batti batti o bel Masseto ... Voi che sapete too but that's an obviously basic piece. Come to think of it they're all pretty much basic. Maybe I'm not ready for the challange of other compositions.

As far is genius in terms of prodigy, you can't argue that Mozart wasn't a genius. He was extremely able and prolific. So, yes, he was a genius.

Now, to call a Mozart piece "genius" is an opinion. However, there is something in Mozart that makes him the worlds most popular composer (according to Classic FM). Whatever that quality may be, he had it and CPE Bach and Clementi didn't. You can argue all you like that Mozart is boring or bad. It won't change the fact that everyone knows the opening of Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, and many people don't know who Clementi and CPE Bach were.

So, I believe the reason that no one can give you a "concise" answer, is because it's an indefinable characteristic in Mozart that is the reason for him being labelled as genius.

But, it's all opinion. What's the difference between a Monet and a smudge of mud on canvas? Opinion. So, you're entitled to yours. However, unfortunately for you, the rest of the world is entitled to theirs, and I think the vast majority of people would disagree with you.

Just because the vast majority agree to something, doesn't mean it's true.
Lots of people may recognize Mozart as the most popular composer, but consider that lots of people listen to "Opera" that consists of Andrea Bocelli and Il Divo. I'm not convinced by strength in numbers.

If you want to ask why everyone knows the tunes to Mozart, it's because him and his father were shameless promoters of his music, at a time in history when stuff began to be canonized. Mozart and Handel are two of the very first composers who have never left the concert repertoire (Thus why most people also recognize the "hallelujah" from Handel's Messiah), as opposed to figures like Telemann and Bach, who both received "revivals" in the 19th and 20th century.

Mozart is a brand. Like IBM, or Coca-Cola, or Nike. He may be a great composer, but the be all end all? Puh-leeze. Save your "fanboydom" for the PS3/Xbox 360 wars mrgreen .
