Why Only One Egg Hatches
As we all know, little foals are curious creatures, and often ask 'why'. It was no different for me when I was a yearling, and that is why the elders told me this story, and why I am now telling it to you.
Back when the great Mother gave birth to the Marsh, she gave only two Kimeti. There was one buck and one doe, and to them was left the task of creating herds. The doe gave five eggs to the earth, and every egg hatched a single foal. Her foals grew quickly. There was now a strong herd to protect and care for one another and keep our kind alive, and it was good.
But these young bucks and does came to be older ones, as our kind often does, and soon birthed children of there own. And, as the Mother willed, every egg of every doe hatched. The foals of many does grew quickly. They ate up all the insects and took up all the land. Bucks stood face to tail, and does stood side to side, and there were so many that not a single creature could move.
With the birth of the ancient one's children's children, there came an even greater time of suffering, where Kimeti were pushed into the depths of the swamp and could not sleep for fear of drowning. But Mother is always watching, and saw how her children were suffering.
Our great Mother knew her mistake, and gave to the marsh the Crocodile. He had powerful jaws and could run quickly on his four legs and ate up many Kimeti. But soon there were too few Kimeti, so Mother shortened his legs and led him to water, and the Crocodile became less threatening to our kind.
Then, Mother made it so, of every five eggs, only one would give a foal - and that foal would be born blind and weak, not like the strong infants before him. When there are not enough of us, on the rarest of nights, our Mother will let two sacks give a foal, and those two foals will be very special and forever connected.
That way, the swamp would never again see too many Kimeti, and we would always be the right number. And that, little ones, is why only one egg hatches...

Red Berries
Many creatures share the swamp with our kind. Some are large and covered in hair, while others are small and winged. But some are no born into the swamp as the Kimeti are. Some things are changed by the creatures of the swamp. This story is about the Red Berries, and how they got their color.
When the marsh was young everything was brown, much like it is today. The trees were brown, and the earth was brown, and the reflection of the sky on the water was brown. Shades of brown were all we knew, other than the colorful patterns given to our skin at birth. But there was a creature with very sharp eyes who was tired of all the brown, and that creature was the Hawk.
One mid-day, Hawk grew so tired of seeing all the same colors, that he claimed he would fly far from the swamp and bring back the most beautiful color he could find and give it to the trees. The other animals laughed, for most of them never left the marsh, and knew of no other colors than swamp colors.
Eager to prove the other creatures wrong, Hawk took flight. No one knows what Hawk saw once he left the swamp, for he never did tell of the other lands he came across, but when he returned he grasped in his talons a bright red, and the other creatures were so surprised that they clamored to see it. Hawk was overcome by the crowd and dropped the color, and it landed on a bush, turning all the berries on the bush bright red.
Hawk thought this was a waste of the color that he had flown so far to find, and he became so mad that his eyes narrowed, and those eyes were passed on to all of his children. But the other creatures liked the new color, and so it stayed, and every berry to grow on those particular bushes always became red.
