I took yesterday (nov9) off.
I wanted to spend the whole day working on an old computer that I picked up. I tried to install DOS, but the system just didn't know what to make of it. THAT, and I can't seem to find a good version to use anyway. Not that the hard-drive is even needed. Just use a boot-disk and then switch the disks out. The whole thing runs from RAM anyway.

And to prove how old this thing is.
It only has 32MB of RAM.
A 2GB HD.
And the processor itself said "Pentium/MMX tech inside" on it.
There is only one expansion slot, and the card inside just has more slots on it.
When I got it, it was running Windows98.

I couldn't even install "American McGee's Alice" on it.
And that was the reason that I picked it up.

Too good for DOS, not good enough for games.

I'm not sure how to take that.
I guess that it depends on how you feel about that.
(insult or compliment) ?

Anyway, I finally managed to get MS-DOS 6.22 loaded.
As it turns out, old dos disks have to be labeled.
The install checks for labels, and won't install if the label is wrong.

xD!! Not really either. >_<; I suppose in a way it's an insult for him since he was too busy with that to spend time with me sometimes.....but then again he was trying to force me to learn it too...and I didn't care. @_@; I wanted my barbies...not computer parts!!!!! gonk gonk

But, I didn't mean it in any way towards you. It was just a simple statement. xD!!!!

Oh OK.

Now that I have a working copy of MS-DOS, I have installed Windows95.

It had 22 install floppies and 1 boot disk.

How do you work on DOS? I mean...isn't GUI better?

Depends on how you look at it.

GUI does have alot of very cool extras that I would not be able to live without. mrgreen

but DOS can do alot too, and it CAN'T get a virus. (tis immune)

And to answer your first question...
You can work on DOS if you know the commands.

It's command line only.

MS Dos was fun when I learned it. Still, it's a lot of work to be bothered with.

Isn't Ubuntu better than MS?

There's that "ubuntu" again.
That's the second time that I've heard the name.
What is it exactly?

(there's an entire site of people developing software that can be used with DOS - like a dos usable version of IE)

I think that's Unix. Am almost sure of it.
