Virus trouble

When I turned on my section today (i never turn off the pc itself), my antivirus said I had a trojan in one of my files.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\wbem\proquota.exe

I checked online after putting it in the virus chest.
And there were conflicting reports.
(one said it should be in the servicepackfiles folder, SO... )

So, sence the chest keeps stuff from being activated, I restarted my pc.
(usually if it's a system file, windows will replace it itself)

Since nothing popped up again (and nothing wouldn't start right), I went ahead and deleted it.

I don't know how it got there. My computer didn't detect it last night,
and I always unplug from the internet when I go to bed.

Must have snuck on yesterday, and just not activated till i logged in.

There are a lot of viruses like that.
Ones that don't even become active until either you log-on or access a certain area of your computer.
I remember there was one a few years back that didn't react unless you tried to run DOS.
For those who never ran DOS, they never even realized they had it. >_<;

What's with you people.
Just because it's old doesn't mean it's no good.

DOS or "MSdos" as in "Microsoft Disk Operating System",
is a command line OS(operating system), where you have
to manually type in key letters or words
to activate particular functions.

It is known for giving you a...
"this is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file" responce when you mis-type something.

Dos, as an OS, does NOT exist anymore.
However, every more common OS has an underlying command line base.
You can start it by using the "RUN" option in your start menu,
and then typing "CMD" or "command".

DOS commands are very useful for creating batch files
to do stuff for you. Like turn something on or open a folder
when you log onto your computer. That way you don't have to
do it yourself.

FOR EXAMPLE...
If you create a ".bat" file with this line of text in it...

@echo off
explorer.exe /root,"C:\Documents and Settings\(your user name here)\My Documents\My Pictures"

When you click the file, it will open that folder for you.
You can also put in any directory path you want.
ALSO, you could put it in the...

C:\Documents and Settings\(your user name here)\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

folder, and it would autostart when you log onto your computer.

Type in...

@echo off
start cd C:\Documents and Settings\(your user name here)\My Documents\My Pictures

and it would open a command line window to that directory path.

OR YOU COULD TYPE...

start wmplayer.exe

Or the name of any program to start it.

SO dos is very useful.
Especially when you want to open something that has a very long directory path. Just create a ".bat" file that will do the job for you.

the keyword in your post dude was "manually", most people won't bother with a manual task when they can get it done automatically. hence why there are more automatic transmissions than standard or stick

AND that's why you create a batch file.
Because it's automatic.
Well, once you make it anyway. hehe

You know what though?
I got another stupid virus warning today.
Same sitch too, so I figured that something must be already on my system
downloading the others. So I did a whole system sweep.
And found a ton of stuff in my "temp" folder.
Stupid temp folder. I've had trouble with it before.

Not to mention the registry edit.
But it was just in my defrag program, so I deleted it.
Figured That if it broke, I would just reinstall the program.
But nothing broke, YAY!

Eh. MS DOS is effective. But, everyone knows we're lazy. Thus the GUI razz So after GUI, who bothers with DOS? Unless it is to get rid of some problem -___-

I have some very old Russian Tetris game that uses a floppy.
Like floppy-floppy. Not a hard-cased floppy.
And it will only run from DOS. xD

I used to have a computer that could use them.
Man it was a hunk of junk.
I trashed it the second we got our new one.

That old one couldn't access the internet,
and the only games it had were math games.
(do the calculations before the numbers finish drifting to the bottom)

Yeah.
My mind blanked out and I couldn't think of what else to call them.

Well, my computer is fairly newish.
2007 model.
Windows Vista and all that jazz.

But, I had an old Windows 98 computer that I took apart and merged with this one.
So, it has 3 CD drives (2 being DVD & Burners)
A 3.5 floppy drive, the bigger 5.25 floppy drive
it's original harddrive plus the shitty-backup Win 98 drive.

vista? yuck, that's total garbage.
I know a girl that said her vista erased all her personal data for some reason.
(not to mention all the copyright software on it)
Many people say all that prevended them from playing their cd's and dvd's.

XP is the way to go.

I have Windows XP Professional Version.
It rocks.
