As for me I compose quite a bit. I really would like to become a professional composer. I've written just shory of 40 pieces so far. Everything frome Minuets and Waltzes up to a Sinfonia for String Quintet. I've written 6 piano sonatas. 5 for solo piano and 1 for 2 pianos. Working right now on learning the intricacies of counterpoint.

Well, I somewhat invent tunes. I can't help playing the piano or violin! XD But as my vote says, I don't write it down. I'm good at remembering. It's fun if you can write your own composition, but for me, I do it for fun. That's how I play my music. wink

I would love to compose, but I think that's a bit out of my league for now (considering I have barely any formal musical background). I can improvise a bit, but it's nothing extraordinary.

I like to do little improv exercises on the piano when I practice. I never write them out because they're a spur of the moment kind of thing, not to mention I find notating music time-consuming (or maybe I'm just lazy, lol).
I also like to do my own piano arrangements of songs, but they're not really compositions, just reworking existing materials of others. ^^;

I can improvise a bit, but it's nothing extraordinary. Yeah it takes some work. I've been teaching myself what i can. Mostly though once you understand the basic structure of different forms it comes down to trial and error. I reference the masters when i'm working on understanding a new form. For example when i was working to understand the construct of a Fugue i've referenced my copy of Bachs's The Art of the Fugue.

I'm just getting into it, but I've written several pieces for solo harp and am working on a movement for a string quartet. I'm hoping to major in it. ^_^

Metaburo Fanmaker I'm just getting into it, but I've written several pieces for solo harp and am working on a movement for a string quartet. I'm hoping to major in it. ^_^ good for you! The hardest thing i've found is having a consistent harmony between the different instruments.

No not yet, I am in the process of teaching my self how to get he music form my head onto the paper. I have no problem with melodies and harmonies; it's for me writing it down on paper. I can hear the pieces in my head; I just struggle to get all of the parts down on paper. xp
