DX Yes i have it's horrible! What would it be like with a world without music! I mean music is everywhere! It's all around us! I mean even subway noise is music! Noise is basically music! Music doesnt have to be played on an instrument or sung. Studies show that if a child plays an instrument, she/he does better in school X3

Yea, it's not something that's just happened recently. I've been hearing about budget cuts in the past few years, and usually the arts department is the first to face the brunt of it. Some schools cut out band/choir entirely...it's a pity, really. Musical training really adds to personal development and overall helps in learning, IMHO.

Facing budget cuts, a lot of schools are cutting music and other art programs. The school my kids go to did not cut their music program, but they did lay off some great teachers and cut the Alternative Program - a program designed to assist students who struggle with standards classes and thus fail miserably.

Note: My daughter was in this program last year and it is the first time she actually passed since the 4th grade. Prior to that they just moved her up the next grade level because she can't still be in junior high when she turns 16. Unfortunately, she doesn't qualify for special ed as she's not learning disabled and could actually do the work if she weren't so attention-deficit.

I'm glad band is still open, but choir was cut years ago... and who knows what will happen next year... hard choices. sad

Right now my school is thinking about cutting all of the fine arts classes. That pisses me off T^T Kids need music to live, without orchestra, band, or chorus, people in the next generation will make the world dull! D:

It's a reality in my district.

As a result of a major deficit, they made it a 4-day school week this year. That might sound nice, but what it does is eliminates teacher prep periods, which in the case of the elementary schools means the time when they go to PE and music. Therefore, music and PE was cut as a result of this at the elementary level.
They were also close to cutting middle school band from the school day, but they put it back in, which is good for me because we get to have jazz band in the morning instead of the school day. They were going to put middle school band in the morning at the high school because our director was going to be one of the only music teachers left in the district. This meant that they were putting jazz in the day, which meant for us choosing between jazz and wind ensemble.
They also got rid of the choir teacher because it was only her second year at our school. She was one of about 20 teachers that were cut from the high school alone.

And it's not so simple as protesting. The school board has made up its mind and there's nothing we can do about it. We had one parent with grants all lined up and ready to submit and our superintendent told her to keep them. It's really a sad state we're in.

yeah, many schools are cutting art/music classes because of budget problems. My highschool cut their choir program. But it's a good thing we still have orchestra.....or now at least. Who knows what their going to cut next?
People need art programs. It's just as important as those other classes.

That's just, sad, really.

I mean, what's a world without music? Music is basically the same as faith -- without it, the world would be hopeless.

My school is a performing arts school, so I'm really far from giving a good opinion on this. I'm glad though, that they made an opening for me in the middle of the year, last year, otherwise I'd go to a really crappy middle school that had NO piano classes.

D< If I went there, I'd be pissed!

The elementary schools in my city haven't just cut music classes. They actually cut all of the activities. That's why my brother's school times are 8:00 - 1:30. Mine are 8:30 - 3:15. So the grade school kids have nothing fun to do anymore.

I moved around a lot when I was an elementary student, so I went to four different elementary schools. The first three elementary schools did not even have any music program, which royally sucked. It was overwhelming when I went to my fourth elementary school because it was required that students take a music course, whether it's vocal or instrumental. I had never heard of a choir before or knew what it was. Because I could not play an instrument save for the recorder at the time, I was placed into choir. I'm glad that the schools around here where I live put such an important emphasis on music, because I was really missing out on stuff beforehand.

My high school's choir program had something called a Choral Music Booster, so volunteers could pool their money into it and help raise money to keep the choral program alive. We do many fundraisers such as car washes (and something where you go to a restaurant with a CMB flyer. You present the flyer, and 20% goes to the choral program). We're just that desperate to keep music alive at my high school. Even the band/orchestra kids did the same thing, with the exception of car washes.

When I was in high school they cut music from the curriculum. I had it in Year' 8 and then when I reached Year 9 it was removed because only 3 people in the entire school had chosen to do it ((I was one of those three)).

Then the year after I graduated from high school, they brought it back in.

I still got into the Con a couple of years later despite it; apparently you don't need Tertiary scores to do Classical Voice at uni.

The Con? As in the Conservatorium of Music, Sydney? ;D You must be a fellow Aussie then. :3

Hm, it's not that difficult to go to the Con... though it's good that you went to it for Uni. I hear the High School there is ridiculous. @.@
