What is 俺??

Hi, I know this is pretty random, but what is this character: 俺?

I know in japanese it's ore, which is an impolite form of 'I' that guys often use...
but I haven't heard it in mandarin. Chinese pera-kun (a program that can read chinese characters on the internet) tells me it's pronounced 'an' and means I, but do people really use it?

I saw my cousin using it on her msn screen name.

The simple answer: it's Japanese, so it doesn't have to make complete sense.

I have PRC friends using it as 'me'. It's a Northern Dialect.
Edit: Yea I just googled it it means 'me.'
