I've only finished typing two stories and already working on another one for my friend. What you are about to read is the most recent one I have completed. (: It's short and gives off a light feeling... I hope. Tell me what you think. Please enjoy! ;D
The Flower By: Katrina Cruz
I was a bud. The flower nearest me, I called mother. My mother told me about the life of a flower. We bud, bloom, then shrivel. She said I would turn into a beautiful flower, one worthy of being plucked. All of us wanted to be picked. It was a way of knowing that our lives would be useful to someone. Whether we were used to catch someone's eye, make someone's day, or brighten a room, we were happy to be of use in any way. It was how we lived our lives to the fullest.
Mother did not get picked. She remained in the same place and died in the same place. When she left, I kept all that she taught me. Every minute of every day, I would check to see if I had bloomed yet. Each day was the same, sadly. Then, a beautiful flower opposite me said, "My! You are so very close! It won't be too long now!" I thought she was talking to the another flower since I knew I had not changed. She looked straight at confused, little me and said, "Ah, so you don't see it?" She tilted her head to point at a certain direction. I followed and saw a bud who looked very different from me. I compared the bud and I. The flower across from me said, "You see. She is a new bud. Unlike you, she will bloom much later." Soon after, that beautiful flower was plucked.
I pondered our encounter for days on end, forgetting to check myself if I had bloomed yet. I was confused with what she meant. One day, I noticed that I was ready but didn't see it until now. I finally realized that the changes that happened in me each day were so small and undetectable that I would not have noticed it unless I ignored it for a long while.
The day I always waited for came. It was finally my turn. A great many of us were put in a basket which went without any sides or even a top. One flower moved while being cut so her stem was not as long as ours. Still, she was put in the basket with us. She kept moving, irritating those around her. Then, the wind punished her and took her with him. Upon seeing this, we all behaved while being transported in the basket. I was put in a vase near a window where I can see the place I had grown and waited for my dream to be fulfilled. Then, I saw her, the flower with the short stem. She smiled and danced happily with the wind. I looked back at my life and remembered my mother. Did we really live life to the fullest?
