Contemporary or Classical? And do you mean any musical artist or instrumental composers, only?
I recommend Yann Tiersen for instrumental... :]] And Yuki Kajiura. <3

Well, there's the three great B's, namely Bach, Beethoven and Brahms~
Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky and Rachmaninoff if you prefer a russian flavor~
Strauss and his waltzes and polkas are always a treat to listen to~
And of course the piano deities that are Liszt and Chopin... I could go on and on XD

If you want some different stuff than you probably know of try... uhh... Prokofiev, Rimsey-Korsakov, Rossini, Dvorak, Borodin, Debussy, Elgar, Bizet, Satie, Puccini, Faure, Chopin, Verdi, Saint-Saens, Strauss, Sibelius, Grieg, Holst, Vivaldi.
Being new to classical music you may not hear of these often as you would Mozart, Beethoven or Bach. But their just as common in the classical world.

If you want music from the Classical Era : Beethoven, Haydn, Mozart. Baroque : Handel and Bach (and Vivaldi? Correct me if I'm wrong about him) Romantic : Tchaikovsky, Schubert, Rachmaninoff, Chopin, Liszt (not quite sure with Schubert) Modern : Stravinsky (?)
