im really getting sick of people saying that atheists hate god, or referring to us as "anti-christs"
for an example, look at this

The sad truth is, you're probably going to face a lot of that in life. There are plenty of people out there who just don't understand, nor do they want to make an effort at understanding. Sometimes I find it funny, other times I find it frustrating. In the end, I've realized that getting mad won't do anything but bring down my day. I still get mad, of course, but it's easier to calm down when I realize that there just isn't any point to it. If you can educate them, then that's great, but if someone refuses to listen at all, I don't waste my time with them.

Really obvious, right? Well, if you search for discussions of this song, you'll see a lot of posts by Christians saying that it's about a guy "Struggling with his faith" who "Wants to believe, and needs help from God to get through this crisis of faith." In fact, the extent of ludicrous misinterpretation of this song led the lyricist to actually say the following in an interview:

It should've been a nail in throat of the public, but instead some took it as a declaration of faith when I wanted to make it clear that I don't believe in God - and that even if there is a He or a She they have nothing to do with organized religion.

It's called a straw man argument. They replace a given argument with a similar one which is nonetheless indefensible, so that their argument is lent credibility.

Every group has its closed-minded, not-so-nice members.

Unfortunately, there is a negative connotation associated with the word "atheist" that tends to get passed down in Christian communities. In fact, I imagine that if you were to go up to a typical Christian group and tell them, "I don't believe in God" they would be more accepting of you than if you were to tell them, "I am an atheist." It's exactly the same sentiment, but "atheist" automatically puts them on the defensive, like someone's trying to do them personal harm.

My aunt (who thinks I'm a Christian, as far as I know) is the sweetest person in the world, but I even heard her once talking about her ex-husband's girlfriend... she was saying that she didn't want that woman to expose her son to "that atheist devil-worshipping crap." I bit my tongue because my dad was in the room at the time and I don't wish for him to know anything about my beliefs. It amazes me that people can hold the delusion that a group of folks who don't believe in any worship-deserving entities would worship anything at all.
