Chapter One: RED TEXAS
(Our story starts with a teenage girl of 16. A clever brunette with an uncanny dormant power, she is not fully aware of her ability; none the less this girl still lives a normal life—or at least she did. Karina Burkeen is in her room still sleeping from the last night’s party. She’s about to get a brutal awakening that neither her nor the world will suspect. These are her memories, this is her story.)
In the frigid night, Screams of terror echoed in the distance. The sharp smell of dirt and blood burned my nose, as I struggled to rise. My line of sight was a bit smudgy. I looked around frantically to see when those sirens, and smoke was coming from, it was everywhere. Smoke mingled with the shadows of confusion. I was in my neighborhood. I sensed danger approaching me, well, the incessant moans of these dark creatures, is what gave danger feeling away. What are they? Is that sound their eerie, raspy voice? Why are my neighbors running in fear and calling their names as they run the opposite direction? All these questions in my head demanding an answer came to an abrupt, loud mechanic screech echoed in my head. I clasped my ears to muffle that awful noise. Before I knew it everything started to blur once again. “No!” I protested, but I couldn’t stop the process and the screech. “What are those things?” was all I could say before I went unconscious...
The sound of my alarm clock rendered me back to reality, my hand sloppily reached out to stop the alarm clock. Some traces of the sunlight peeked through my blinds in my room. I reluctantly sighed, and let the cold floor greet my feet. I staggered to my bathroom to wash off the smudged makeup from last night’s party at Allison’s house. “Let’s see…” I whispered to myself as I made a to-do list in my head. Get dressed, go get groceries, visit jenny’s cheer competition, do homework, shower, and then sleep. I walked over to my closet and pulled out my sandy colored shorts along with my green tank top. “Meh. It’s almost summer.” I said to myself. It was 9:34 am on a beautiful cloudless Houston day. I stepped out of my room to say good morning to my grandmother.
