I love playing the piano. I really do. And not because I'm Asian, and my parents are paying for it. lol I just love how you can get into a piece, and put all your emotions in it. But that's not the point.
I go into piano competitions, and I have won some of them. Most of the time, these competitions have MANY Asians. What happened to other people? I am not trying to be racist in any way, but piano can't be the only thing Asians play. Right? Anyway, if you are NOT Asian, and you play the piano, I congraulate you. *claps*
So who isn't Asian, and plays the piano???

String instruments are the next set of instruments besides the piano that Asians are commonly known to play. Seriously, 90% of the violinists in my high school's orchestra/string ensemble consisted of Asians. rofl But most of the time, it's the parents who push their kids into playing a musical instrument. I know some Asians who hated that and gave up playing an instrument because their parents kept forcing it on them.
And my high school choir piano accompanist and college mixed choir accompanist aren't Asian, either. It's only for my college's women choir that the accompanist is Asian. xD
Also, I am Asian and I cannot play the piano. emo My dad tried enrolling me in classes when I was 4-5, but then my parents separated and I haven't been able to take classes since. I'm taking classes for it, though being 19 and all, I won't be as good as those who started very young.

Asian parents are more strict about playing an instrument. My friends started piano but their parents let them quit going to the piano teacher and gave up the lessons. (Not mine! They drag me to that accursed place very week. Thankfully I'm on one of the longest vacations I've ever had...2 months! wow!)

Forgive me... I don't think I have any friends who are white who play the piano, I guess that's just how my grade is. The entire flute section in my school is completely asian though! .....If I disappear.

The thing is, Asian parents often have high expectations of their children, and learning piano (or any other instrument, but piano seems to be the most popular choice) is almost always on the to-do list, other than lessons in art, math, swimming, dance, etc. If they can afford to do it, they will do it so their children are more well-rounded in their education.
Not many make it to the top though--I've seen a good number of students quit once they reach a certain level. Learning an instrument takes up lots of time and effort, after all, and if your heart isn't in it, especially if the parents are the only force behind the lessons...

heart Playing Piano is for everyone who has the inclination and had the opportunity to learn and play it. I am Asian, and don't know how to play piano.... There might a lot of Asians playing piano because it is encourage in the culture since childhood to excel in both music and academic. If you play classical instrument, it kinda shows that you are rich and part of the elite family who can afford to hire a instructor for you and for you to go music/piano lesson heart

I'm asian and I've played from the age of 4. But I was never forced. There was a piano in my living room at that time and I just started smashing about on it xD My mum got a teacher for me and I still continue to play minoring in violin and flute.
