Do you play with or without a shoulder rest? What's your opinion of each way? I play personally without one. It just feels awkward for me.

I don't play an instrument that requires a shoulder rest, but I had a friend though who chose to play her violin without one. I guess it all depends on having good posture and doing what's comfortable for you.

I was taught to play with a shoulder rest from the very beginning, so playing without one feels odd to me. It's also much harder for me to keep my violin in place when I am not using one. But, that could be too because I do not paly as often anymore.

Same here, But my shoulder rest got stolen during contest... I honestly don't know how it happened... But I guess that's my luck since I forgot to put it on when we were going to contest, and my case was in the cafeteria in my school... so yeah... not entierly too smart...

I play a cello. So I don't need a shoulder rest. But my friends don't use theirs. They say it makes it harder to keep balanced.

i play the violin and my teacher has taught me from the beginning to use it. i can play without it but my posture turns to mush if i dont use one. so i personally say with the shoulder rest.

With a shoulder rest. it is more comfortable, and posture looks better. especially us people with longer necks.
Majority of the people i know who learned from the beginning to use a shoulder rest are like me: we don't understand how others can be comfortable with out one. But the very few i know with shoulder rests were not taught to use one. some dont even know what it is.
it could very well depend on the director. in my elementary, middle, and high school orchestras, it was required.

I learned to play with one after my teacher showed me hers and I love it.
It didn't last long, though. I could never seem to adjust it just right and it wasn't really comfortable. I got fed up and took it off, and I LOVE playing without it. It's easier to balance and you can feel like vibrations so well.
I guess it just depends on you.

I use one and am comfortable with that. But you know, it is really a very individual thing.

Ugh, shoulder rests are a hassle for me. I've been playing without one for so long, so I prefer no shoulder rest.

I like using a cloth or something instead of a shoulder rest most of the time, but normally I use a shoulder rest just to keep my violin up. I've noticed that a lot of people that I know who don't use shoulder rests are either REALLY good or REALLY bad xD
