It really doesn't bug me. I'm not really a fan of MMORPGS in the first place.

People taking off a pre-order because a MMO is monthly subscription just sounds ridiculous to me.
Also, I'm in the same boat really. Not to mention my fail computer.

Well i am not surprised about FF14's Subscript fee. Sadly the game from what i have heard and played...is SLOWER than 11. I saw some videos of higher levels and still the combat was about the same pace. FF 14 just looks nice, that is all.
To the subscript fee: Most MMO games that are like Wow, FF 11/14, The Old Republic, and i think Fallout Online (if it's true) do not have an in game store to sell OP items for a few hours at like 15$ or so. They make money with Monthly Fees and merchandise from their stores (Square Enix for example.) so they can keep servers running for them. If a game is truly good, they make Expansions which cost a bit more money to upgrade Via a code and Disc. The Free to play games (LOTRO, D and D Online, and about 100+ others) make most of the cash to run servers through in game stores. You buy credits with real money then spend it in the store for items or increased EXP gain. Free to play games that are balanced are hard to come by as A) the weapons in the stores can only be bought and not found. B) to get the best gear in some RPG MMO's you require items from said In game Store. and C) most of Free to Play offer so little for free and require an upgrade package to gain more character slots, higher levels and so on.
I have played Online games before, 5 years of wow and even demoed Everquest for a bit. The rate at video games today, every franchise can become an MMO. YES, Even MARIO!
