----A Fantasy Steampunk Roleplay
---------------[Characters]♟[Settings Guide]♟[Ooc]
Victorian-era Boston. In a blacksmith's shop, a man in dirty canvas coveralls is under a machine, tinkering with some unseen parts. A girl stands by with a toolbox, inspecting the visible parts on top. She is helped by a little clockwork robot, who can get into the small places she can't. It's an engine--a steam-powered engine for a vehicle, all shining brass and visible workings.
She looks at the clock on the wall, taking note of it's position. It's almost nighttime. She turns on a gas lamp, brightening the room and revealing workbenches on all the walls, littered with cogs and wheels and pipes and wires.
Outside, on the streets, an aristocratic couple walks by, in pristine evening dress and suit, looking for all the world like a living vintage photograph. The lady pulls from her bag a watch, whose beautifully intricate workings are behind open glass for all to see.
Everywhere you look you see the signs of progress--but not progress as we know it. Progress of a different sort.
If steam had become the preferred propulsion method over gasoline combustion engines. If clockworks had never been replaced by silicon chips.
Sometimes, the sky is temporarily blotted out--not by aeroplanes, but by the monolithic hydrogen zeppelins, carrying people across the countries, and occasionally even overseas. It's the past. Coal fires still heat the steam engines. Women still wear dresses to their ankles (usually). Men dress in dapper suits, and wear caps and carry canes... and advanced clockwork-powered electric guns.
This is the future, except that it's one hundred and fifty years in the past. This is Steampunk.
--------"Savin' the likes of ye? I know, I must be a few cogs short. Come on then, we need a new deckhand..."
---------------"What's that shiny ball? That what they're looking for?"
In the time of invention, a group of genius inventors banded. They were claimed to be insane, obsessive and lost in their own work. They were called The Brotherhood of Inventors. The story goes, mad as they were, they were the pinnacle of steam technology, and are the reason the world has formed into what it is today. Many of their inventions were lost in the breakdown of their laboratory, though a few inventors were able to reverse engineer what they could salvage.
There have been rumours for many, many years that the Brotherhood was also working on a new, more powerful method of running engines - other than steam. Preposterous, who could ever think steam would be undermined in power?
The Brotherhood did have a little something up their sleeve… Something that would change the world of steam and cogs.
Something the size of a man’s fist.
