for ******** sake, don't stretch the whole goddamn page, idiots. Secondly, even if this takes effect, I'm fine, as I'm in Canada, and all the places that might be shut down can merely move their physical servers up here, and then be free to continue on like nothings happened... ideally.

this reminds me of that scare a while back about how the costs to access the internet would get out of control.... that never happened, so I have little doubt this censorship thing will be away with time as well.

-sigh- i understand your in another country but still
if this is going on here it might effect your country in the near by
furture IF it gets passed
wether we live half way across the world we must realize this is a serious matter! It could possibly spread. But then again we just gotta wish it wont pass because u never know...

I seriously doubt that this bill will pass. If it did, there woul be riots from middle-class businessmen, teens, and any non-prude within the country. The only people who benefit from this bill are the super prudes who think that porn and cleavage are a sin, and even they would probably hate to see youtube go down. Also, this is a maltter of free speech, if it did pass, the Supreme Court would probably take it down not long after.

I assume no one read what this bill was trying to do.

1: The ability to force DNS registrars to disable websites inside the U.S. that support the spread of copyrighted material against the copyrighters wishes, as well as aids in the sale of knockoff products.
2: The ability to force U.S. online companies (specifically payment services) from interacting with foreign companies who are part of file sharing and aiding knockoff products.

---

I am not arguing that this is a good thing, but before getting in an up roar one should know the facts.

---

However, if this passed it would be a step one in what could potentially be a slippery slope into actual censorship of the internet.

Sites such as youtube could be blocked if it were discovered that there was intelectual property that was being shared against U.S. law (which there is plenty). Now what this bill would allow them to do is shut down the entire site of YouTube, not just the pages that infringe on copyright.

Say they expanded the bill at a later time, this could include things that the writers of said bill deemed immoral.

Overall, a bad thing.

@Lazurkri:

I think you need to look at the bigger picture, yes we are in Canada. But this bill would effect us. Any site in the U.S. could be shut down, this could be a site you never use - or it could be your favourite site. Many sites that are operated out of Canada are actually hosted in the states (such as all of my websites). That would mean that the U.S. government would be able to shut down my sites if they were discovered to have shared copyrighted content.

wait would the UK be effected question or is it around the world, or just USA, and is it just.Com or is it.Org and that lot as well question
PostPosted: Fri Nov 19, 2010 3:30 pm
....it would affect you, unless the physical servers that the website(s) in question actually runs off of are moved out of the U.S...
