Whisper of the heart (1995)

Trailer
This is a film I had seen the cover of a couple times but had never really heard anything about.
This was the first feature by Ghibli not directed by Miyazaki or Hiiragi. It was directed by Yoshifumi Kondo, who was hoped to become successor to Miyazaki before his unfortunate passing in 98. (he was a animation director on films such as kikis delivery service, princess monoke and a few others). He died of a aneurysm which was said to be caused by his excessive dedication to his work. This is also what us said to influenced miyazaki to work in much more of a relaxed maner. Although this isnt directly related to the movie I believe its worth knowing
This is the film that inspired "The cat returns" so if you have seen that but not this, then you have some catching up to do (I however havent seen the cat returns, but its on my must do list).
Well enough info, My thoughts...
This movie starts slowly and although it gains a bit of pace it still only really reaches a slow medium pace at most. There is no "Magic" per sey, No talking animals, no unrealistic fighting or such. This movie is very much REAL. Its based on the relationship of a jr.high girl (Shizuku) and a (ug...dont want to give anything away) a boy. This boy has a hard but realistic dream, and his persuing of his dream causes her to find a dream of her own after not having any real life inspiration.
This film doesnt rely on action, unrealistic events or gimmics to pull you in, but uses old fashioned story development to pull you in. You kinda wish something big would happen and you keep waiting for it, but it doesnt come, what does happen is a very relatable set of expected (but not anticipated) events. Really I cant say that anything mind blowing happens, infact if you need that, then this isnt for you. But if you like sweet and deep (but not psychologically deep) storys this is a really good watch.
IMDB puts it at a 8/10, and I would agree. Its not massivly rewatchable (after seeing it once), but I know I need to see it one or two more times for the refferences to other ghibli works and such.
There are a few really good quotes that Im sure many of us have felt before...like (roughly from memory)
"What if im just a rock...what if there are no gems inside me"
we have all been told that we need to dig inside and find that something special, but we know that we may not find it.
Well, have any of you guys seen it? if so...thoughts?
