Quote:
With security lacking as it was, breaching the main yard of the compound wasn't all that difficult, even for a pregnant prisoner like herself.

Her rage controlled once again, Midnight's bear form had retreated and she appeared to be just your average human woman until one looked closer.

Covering her skin were a multitude of tribal tattoos marking her rank within a local tribe, but the aged brown ink was made difficult to read against her well-tanned skin. Decorating her forearms and legs were various tribal trinkets such as the teeth of large predators. Her hip-length jet-black hair was wild and untamed from her poor treatment and days in a cage. Lastly and most obvious, having been raised free of the rules of civilization she was most comfortable in her own skin, therefore, she wore little clothing.

While the courtyard was up in chaos over this lost experiment, she was still (a mostly) naked woman. Even pregnant, she still had generous curves that would catch many a persons eye... and this wasn't the type she wanted eyeballing her. Sticking to the shadows as best she could, Midnight headed for the front gate of the prison.

******

The double portcullis front gate to the upper levels was normally well guarded however, there were only two sentries minding it tonight, with the whole rest of the compound in uproar over the clearly talented Fer De Lance. Once he'd got into the forest, even more reinforcements had been called and the buildings, grounds and various labs were not as well garrissoned as they could have been.

A disadvantage though, was that every guard, every monster, everyone, was on high alert and apt to notice even the smallest of movements.

The twisted stag monster that had been accompanying the earlier watchman paced the corridor leading off from the main hall, to the front gate. Raising its head, the beast's six nostril slits flared and it uttered an ugly soft snort and trotted out of the shadows, clopping hooves tracing after the figure that just swept past it a few moments ago, trailing the loose lead on the cracked metal collar it wore. Treading lightly, it was attempting to sneak up on her.

Focused on her escape as she was, Midnight failed to notice the creature until it was almost upon her. Alerted by its throaty growl as it leaped, Midnight used what little reaction time she had to bring her arms up in an effort to shield her torso.

Biting back a scream as the creature clamped down on her lower arm, Midnight allowed her rage to flow forth and transform her body. With its mouth busy on her arm, Midnight made quick work of putting out the creatures eyes with the claws of her free hand. Roaring in pain, it quickly released the were-bear's arm and made to retreat. Midnight didn't let it.

Hiding its corpse in the shadows, Midnight found a rock and tossed it near the gate, hoping to the sound it produced would be enough to distract the guard from his post long enough for her to escape.

The creature attacked the prisoner determinedly but alas, it seemed it was no match for the powerful were-bear female, and soon lay discarded in a crumpled heap, abnormally formed flap mouth gaping to show rows of teeth. It was frightening to observe even in death.

Although it had failed in its purpose, it had managed to inflict a wound on her arm. Now however, the entrance was almost unguarded, and very quiet.

The clattering of the rock grabbed the guard’s attention and he went towards the noises to investigate, suspiciously pointing the weapon he held in a very meaningful manner.

“Who’s there? Show yourself at once!” the guard demanded, ready to fire and stun the escaped prisoner at any sign of movement.

He had been informed there was a were-bear on the loose in this level but no idea what she looked like. While he was searching for the source of the noise, Midnight might have a chance to break out!

While the rock hadn't taken the guard far from his post beside the gate, it did draw the man's attention away from her direction. Tip-toeing along the wall Midnight approached the gate, maintaining pressure on her wound all the while keeping an eye on the man's back as he searched for the nonexistent enemy. Sneaking up behind the guard, Midnight wasted no time putting him in a headlock and snapping his neck.

Still losing blood from the creatures bite, Midnight salvaged the knife from the guards belt and quickly cut strips off the man's clothing to fashioned herself a temporary bandage. With the bleeding stopped for the moment Midnight unlocked the gate and bolted for freedom using the treeline as cover.

(I'm just gonna assume she smashed through the gate also. Because they aren't quite so easy to unlock like that. Lol. XD Or maybe they need a better gate lock.)

Once she got outside, the grounds were swarming with monsters and guards, and Midnight would have to be very fast and very careful so as not to get noticed.

Using the treeline was a great idea. If there hadn't been a couple of monsters hiding in it, she might have got away. But no - several of them could either see in the dark or smell or hear or had heat vision.

Not surprising then, that as the poor were-bear plunged into the outer edges of the forest, she would begin to hear angry screeches and roars as three monsters broke away from the rest of the roaming search parties and started to chase after that figure running for freedom.

To be precise, she had a ferocious hell hound and two demon monsters after her; one a succubus-type, the other a strong beast-type. If she could outrun them and go farther into the dark forest, she would stand the best chances of escaping.

The hound let out a deafening bark behind her, trying to scare it's quarry into stumbling.

Here in the forest, she had the home field advantage. She'd been raised among the trees. Glancing over her shoulder at the charging hell hound and trailing demons, Midnight smiled evilly. Bring it on doggy! She thought, as she began to dodge and weave through the trees and their limbs.

Leaping through a V-shaped tree trunk, Midnight smiled in satisfaction as a startled yelp told her the hell hound had tried to follow and gotten itself stuck. Picking up the pace Midnight hoped to out distance the remaining demons while they rescued their hound.

It was shame for Midnight that the demons/monsters weren’t concerned about looking after their own kind, no, they were single minded, and seemed to care only for one thing: the orders that they’d been given to hunt and recapture any escapees.

The other two split up and ran past their furiously barking canine companion, hiding in the thick undergrowth, trying to scare their target into running into their trap.

They threw noises in different directions, sending out echoes and growls, hoping to disguise their exact location so they could circle round and pounce on her. One of them was going around to the front while the other would try and take her side on, as she tried to get down the steep slope in the darkness, and the tangled, gnarled tree roots and briars.

Cursing to herself, Midnight picked up and pace. Allowing her animal instincts to flow through her, the expectant were-bear located the demons by scent rather than sight or sound, the stench of fire and brimstone overpowering the forests natural fragrances.

Aware that the hillside would leave her exposed to the demon's ambush Midnight hesitated for a moment and stopped beside a large oak tree. Even with her natural dark vision, navigating such terrain could be disastrous to someone in her condition.

Savagely removing a limb from the oak, Midnight apologized to the forest's spirit and using the guard's knife, quickly cut the branch to a crude point. The hunter becomes the hunted..., she thought as she prepared to turn the demon's ambush on them

The prey had stopped for long enough that the monsters easily caught up to it.

The one that had been running around to the side came crashing out of some briar bushes with a roaring and gnashing teeth, its eyes glaring bright red in the darkness. It rushed straight for Midnight, and bent it’s head low to the ground, charging like a bull.

The second one had sneakily changed its course and came running from behind instead, leaping on trees and rocks like a jumping flea.

It sprang into a high tree and prepared to leap down on her, while its companion was pelting towards her side-on. Midnight should probably find it easy to spear the one that leapt down, if she could dodge out of the way of the one that was charging her in time.

More calls and footsteps were sounding in the forest, searching for the Fer de Lance. If she didn’t get rid of these two monsters quickly, they would call others to the hunt.

Lining up her crude spear and bracing it against the ground, Midnight impaled the charging demon with ease. Using demon's momentum against it, Midnight guided the spear to continue its arc overhead to intercept the 'sneaky' demons leap. Of course after two brutal impacts like this, her make-shift spear snapped in half. Tossing aside her broken spear she cut the demon's throats... just in case they weren't quite dead.

Leaving the corpses where they lay as a warning to any demons who might follow, Midnight slowly made her way down the slope and continued her run into the forest.

With both monsters killed, Midnight had a window to escape into the forests and then out into the wider world.

Fortunately for her, or perhaps unfortunately, there were a couple of members of the Hoofed Tribe (Number 11) from their savannah territory in Purri, who had travelled to the areas around the scientist's compound in search of new members for their tribe.

Every tribe did it occasionally; sent out a 'rescue party' to see if they could get some new blood in the form of escaped prisoners of the scientists.

Some posted scouts to report back any news of recent escapees, and others just went the whole hog and sent in attack teams to break in and 'steal' a couple. This meant they risked getting caught themselves, which caused quite a bit of uproar.

With members of the hoofed tribe living in three seperate territories on the map: the savannah, a small bit of the large forest near the humans town and the grassy meadows and plains just outside of the human's tribe, they were a bit thinly spread on the ground.

Tonight, there was a sheep boy with curly white hair and soft sheep's ears instead of human's ears, and two of his friends; a boar, who really looked like a normal girl apart from the dark stripes marking her sides and her dark brown hair and eye colour, and a horse taur, who had the body of a horse halfway, and the rest of him was human from the waist up; in other words; a centaur.

"Do you think all these monsters running around means there's been a breakout, guys?" whispered the sheep, Riven, nudging Bess in the side excitedly.

The boar girl snorted at him and gave hima playful shove back "Keep your voice down, Riv, one of them's going to hear us! I don't know. But I heard something that sounded like injured monsters further up the mountain. Sounded like someone killed a couple" she shook her long chocolate hair from her eyes with a smirk. "Good on them!"

"Don't get your hopes up. We'll probably never find them in this forest with all this racket going on. Wait till it's calmed down a bit" Mendal spoke quietly and steadily, his eyes searching the woods, pawing at the ground gently.

Escaping deeper into the forest, in hopes of finding her mate or a friendly tribe, Midnight haphazardly plowed through the undergrowth uncaring about the noise she might be making.

As her energy began to bleed out, she slowly to a walk. The fight with the demons has reopened the wound in her arm. Biting back the pain, she appiled pressure with her other hand while searching the surrounding shrubs and plants for those that might hold healing properties.

The sheep’s sensitive woolly ears flipped up, catching the unmistakable sounds of something big crashing through the forest.

“Oh, someone’s coming this way. Can you hear that!” he bounced in place excitedly, receiving another whap round the ears from Bess.

“Shh! How many times do we have to say; be quiet!” It would seem this was the sheep’s first venture away from his village, though he was clearly dressed as a trained scout.

Tiptoeing forwards, the boar girl began to head silently towards the sounds, her steps muffled by the covering of dead leaves. “Ahh…I see someone” she whispered to herself, silently signalling to her two companions to get their attention.

Normally the monsters were noisy, but they weren’t that careless, snapping twigs and crunching around so blatantly. They could be eerily quiet when they wanted to as well. But it sounded like some of them had turned on their creators again and were attacking the humans. In turn, some of them had started to attack the others, and it had all dissolved into one big mess. No wonder there was so many subjects escaping. Midnight and the Fer de Lance couldn’t be the only ones to take advantage of the opportunities.

As the sounds of whoever was approaching drew nearer, they changed and slowed down, almost as if the person was tired, hurt or maybe just clumsy.

Looking where Bess signalled, the others’ gazes alighted upon her; a figure wandering, searching around for something.

Mendal sniffed the air and his silver horse tail swished nervously. “I detect the scent of blood. They seem injured” He whispered, swiping strands of wild, dappled hair from his eyes to peer into the dim forest, but keeping out of sight of the escaped one.

Riven, however, had a different reaction. If they were hurt, they had to help them! Stepping towards the were-bear, he made sounds to get her attention, waving a hand “Psst! Hey, hey, over here! What tribe are you from?” he called softly.

“Riven, get back here!” “What are you doing, cotton brains?!” his companions were none too pleased.
