Hoofed Tribe in Large Forest Village: Village Market

((Hey WritingTime, sorry this reply has taken so long. I never received a notification on my Gaia page for some of the replies in my guild so I missed some of them. I don’t know why the notifications didn't appear.))

Riven smiled and pointed to the equine lady, who had just completed her sale and was chatting to the happy couple before wishing them well and waving them off.

"That one there, with the dark hair", he chuckled, "She's running the stall so it has to be her". He waved at Aidenna, who had seen them approaching and was watching them curiously. "Hi, Miss Aidenna. Are you making many sales today?" Riven greeted politely, letting his gaze roam over the shiny, sparkly items that caught the light.

"Well, hello there. As a matter of fact, I'm not doing so well with them. I need more customers outside of this village" she answered matter of factly before turning to Misty. "So, I see you're the new centaur everyone's been talking about. Misty, isn't it? Are you, by any chance, looking for a job?"

Aidenna didn't waste any time, Riven thought. She'd gotten straight to the point. "Um...she is. She needs to find work so she can stay here and be a part of our village" he chipped in, attempting to help explain it.

"Hm, I...might have some things you could do for me" The woman quirked a smile and gave a mock considering lock while rubbing her chin. "But first, tell me what sort of work you were hoping for, so I have a rough estimate of what I can give you" Her horse tail swished and the charms in it tinkled softly.

Misty listened to Aidenna while she smiled at her and upon hearing her question Misty said, "I don't have much experience with making jewelry, but I like to look at it and wear it, so if you have a spot open I could help you sell it." She hoped this would be enough for the lady to consider her.

She pawed her front right hoof on the ground nervously and looked at Riven hoping he might support her. He had done a lot for her already and she was starting to really like his helpfulness. Even his mother was helpful. Yet she had not repaid either of them yet.

She grabbed Riven's hand hoping he would wrap his around hers and physically show the support he had giving her until now. Misty had a feeling she would have trouble right now since she had never had a job interview before. It was a completely new experience for her.

Aidenna sighed, thinking over what Misty had told her. "Well, that's not much to go on but if you are content to model and sell the things I make, I'd be more than happy to give you a job pedalling them for me" she offered.

Reaching under the counter for a box and several bags, Aidenna began checking them over, counting the sparkling items that she pulled from within and muttering to herself as she ticked them off on an invisible checklist, placing them into a small lockable chest.

Finally, she handed the treasure chest to Misty, along with several empty leather bags and a list of items that looked like a shopping list. "Here you go. I would like you to take these and travel to the aquatic tribe to trade them for items on this list. It's not the easiest job I can find for you, unless you like to travel but it should keep you busy and bring us some new loot. I want plenty of the mermaid scales and crushed coral, you hear?"

***

Riven noticed Misty's nervous actions and didn't flinch away when she grabbed onto his hand. He wrapped his fingers around hers and smiled at her somewhat bashfully, watching what the equine woman did with curious eyes. His smile faded when he heard what the job was though and he leaned forward to protest.

"Aidenna...but, Misty doesn't know her way around the village yet, let alone the rest of Purri! She'll get lost and she might fall into danger on her own" he protested, wondering why she gave his friend a medium level job.

***

"And what better way to see what the rest of it is like than explore it?" Aidenna laughed, "You will go with her as her guide, Riven, along with a couple of guards. This will be good for the both of you" she replied, crossing her arms, "Take it or leave it. I don't have all day to stand here and think of jobs when I have very little information to go off"

Misty took the box she was handed, the list, and empty bags. Receiving her assignment she would nod multiple times and promise in her head to indeed trade off the jewelry in the chest for mermaid scales and crushed coral. Riven seemed to pipe in about Misty not knowing the way to the mermaid territory. To which Aidenna would laugh and tell her that it would be best to explore it essentially.

Misty thought about the deal for a long while before reaching out her hand and shaking Adienna's saying, "I'll do all that you ask of me. I would like to settle into my new life as a centaur, so I suppose I should get to know the populace. When I get back Adienna I do have some personal questions though."

She would look at Riven and blush slightly before thinking about how nice it was of him to hang around her. She secretly liked him despite her attitude towards him and pondered how hoofed creatures like them dated, married even, or had children. She had wanted to be free in the lab she had lived in for the longest time to live as a human and become a member of her own proper family, bu the lab had changed her and now she wondered if she could even settle into a new life again, much less have this dream of hers.

Large Forest – Gate to Grasslands

((I'm going to do a short time-skip because I can't remember what I was going to write for this.))

Aidenna saw them off with a smile and a remark to Misty that she’d always be happy to answer her questions when the pair returned with her goods.

***

“Ready to go?” Riven asked, shouldering a small pack of supplies for their journey to the Aquatic tribe and casually flicking an ear in Misty’s direction. They had taken an hour or so to prepare for their journey; bringing water, cloaks and other small things they would need.

He was standing at the gate that led out of the forested area and into wide grassland, which also belonged to the hoofed tribe.

The guards Aidenna promised would join them on the borders of the grassland, where it melded into wild territory. He was thankful for that. Riven was a guard in training but he’d started late, after his brother was kidnapped by the compound. He never really wanted to be a sentry and go out on missions or fight other tribes but when there weren’t enough numbers to defend the village, all young and fit members were obligated to step up and do their part. He would have been content looking after flocks and farming. Yet it seemed odds weren't in his favour.

Still, he was equipped in the basics, which meant survival skills, knowledge about traveling and the ability to live off the land. It was a handy skill to be able to eat tender grass like most people would eat a salad if the supplies ever became low.

“I think you’ll really like the first part of our journey. You can run as fast as you like through the grasslands and then we get to skirt through the star fields. But after that it turns into yucky swamp and savannah until we reach the ocean” he paused, grinning nervously.

“Geez, I hope we don’t run out of things to talk about on the way there and back. It’s kind of a long way to go. Oh!” he looked at her and clicked his fingers as he remembered something else

“There are going to be a few guards to escort us, so if anything tries to attack, they’ll defend us, so we won’t be alone. They also know the way there and a lot of other useful stuff but…they don’t talk much”

Eralin glanced at Peridot, his eyes suddenly tired.
"I don't think it will come looking for us. Beasts like those get pretty tired after a time and can't change direction easily." He kept turning the spit over the fire.
"If you are wondering about this, some elves don't eat meat, and some do. I only started eating meat when I started to look for my sister. Travelers can't be choosers. We have to eat whatever comes our way, unless it's poisonous of course."
He continued to ponder over the fire, his hands working methodically with the meat. Once it was done, he took it off the spit and divided it into two portions, one larger than the other. He took the smaller portion and gave the larger portion to Peridot.
"I know you didn't mean to scream. It was a normal reaction. I don't blame you. Just try to get some rest now. I believe there is a small stream nearby, so in the morning you can wash, if you like. I'm not planning on moving from this spot for a couple of days, so we can get used to the surroundings. Does that sound ok to you?"

She slowly sat up from her folded position and watched him cooking the meat, starting to feel calmer. The crackling of the fire was soothing and the warmth it gave off was beginning to make her feel tired. She was grateful to Eralin for setting up this camp site and putting out the bed rolls but she did wonder what they would do if it rained. They didn't have a tent with them. And how could they sleep with all the insects and wildlife and...whatever that thudding thing was that Eralin said wouldn't follow them. She wanted to believe him. "Oh, so it won't just walk it's way here slowly? I guess we lost it by now" she smiled, starting to feel better.

She looked at her companion in surprise when he explained about the meat. "Are you sure you can't read minds?" Peridot asked, amused. "You seem to be really good at guessing what I'm thinking"

She accepted the plate he handed to her with thanks, looking down at the evenly cooked meat. How in the world had he managed to do that with a camp fire and a spit? It looked good but she couldn't help wishing there were something else to go with it, like mashed potatoes or vegetables. And maybe a nice sauce. Food of all one flavour like this would be boring. Glancing at his plate, she saw that he had a smaller piece. He was just eating this because he had to, right? He wasn't just being nice to her. She'd be embarrassed...

Tucking into her meal, Peridot nodded around a mouthful of meat, listening about the stream and other things he was saying. "That sounds good" Well, she wasn't about to say 'no, let's move on' That would be rude since it was his quest after all. She was sure Eralin had things all planned out and that he knew what he was doing. "Do you like getting used to different environments when you're travelling? Does it help?" she asked, taking another few bites and washing them down with water from her canteen. "The meat is good, by the way. Ah, can I ask another question? W-well...how do you stop bugs from crawling on you while you're sleeping? I just wondered since, well, we're going to sleep after this"

Misty walked over to Riven wearing a nice white blouse and carried with her the box of jewelry Aidenna had given her. "I am ready to go," she told him with a smile on her face. Her haunches quivered with power rippling through them as she thought about running across empty prairie. That was going to be fun with Riven at her side.

When Misty heard about the guards though she asked him, "We have guards? Is it really dangerous to go other places?" It made her worry as she thought about the have box strapped to her back but then asked, "Can they carry my box for me and what happens if we run into trouble? Do I just drop the box and run?" It all began to worry her as she reached out her hand and tried to rap it around Riven's hand. She did not want any trouble on their trip.

((Aidenna gave Misty a box of jewellery to trade to the mer folks for sea treasures, she didn't give her shells. Lol))

Noticing the flickering of the centaur's haunches, the sheep boy smiled. He knew that centaurs loved the freedom of the grassy fields. She was going to love running through them for sure! He answered her questions as cheerfully and patiently as always "It is dangerous. That's why we have guards. They'll protect us on our way. But Miss Misty, I'm also training as a guard, so I..." he felt his face warm but took a breath and continued "I'll also be protecting you. You'll be safe with me" he promised. Even though he didn't have much training in combat, he knew a little. He already lost his friend and his brother but he swore he wasn't going to let that happen to Misty.

Riven tilted his head slightly, blinking at her hand around his before looking up into her worried eyes. He smiled brightly at her and squeezed her hand as he started to lead her to the gate. He knocked on it with the special combination and led her through as the gate began to open. "I can carry the box for you if you want. So please, tell me if if gets heavy" He had to think for a moment on her next question but he replied fairly quickly. "I think it'll be bad if we drop Aidenna's box. We have to try to hold onto it. But if we have to run, just give it to me. The guards won't carry it because they need their hands free to fight off any baddies"

They headed out into the wide grassy lands as the gate swung shut behind them by the two sentries whose turn it was to guard it. Riven took a breath of the fresh air and started to walk a bit faster, enjoying the wide open sky and the ground that rolled softly on all sides with grasses that danced gently in the breeze. "Let's run to meet the guards" he suggested, looking up her with a childish enthusiam. "Do you wanna see how fast you can gallop? You'd be surprised how much fun it is" Of course, being a sheep, he had shorter legs and wasn't exactly built for running fast, but Misty was.

"I-I don't know if we should gallop around here," Misty voiced as she gripped Riven's hand tighter an turned her head to look at him. "It's so big I feel like we could get lost, plus you have short legs."

As she said this, she looked down at Riven's legs and pointed at them. "I have a heavy package on my back here and you, well, I just feel like if I ran you'd end up dragged by me which would be very rude."

She lifted her hand after saying this and pulled back her hands from him before puckering her lips and kissing him on the cheek. "When this job is done let's run around in the fields, but until then I want us to travel at a nice slow pace. If you do that I might even let you ride on my back."

She blushed when she finished kissing him and walked on ahead at a slow trot. It was time to begin their journey and fun things like galloping she felt needed to be kept at a minimum. The field though did have a quaint feeling and she memorized it so she could return to it later. She wanted to have Riven come with her again after their work.

Eralin just glanced down at his food. "You don't stop them. I'm sorry, it's one of the downsides of traveling. Some days, you don't feel like sleeping, just taking a quick bath in a stream and sleep standing up." He glanced up and smiled at her. "But, enough about me. What about you? I'm interested in hearing what you have to say."

Riven listened to Misty’s worries with the same patient smile he usually held, stumbling a little as she drew attention to his satyr-like legs. “Well, we don’t have to run if you don’t want to. We can take our time and go slowly, it doesn’t matter. I mean, it’s safe here, so if you wanted to go on ahead to the border, I could just run behind and catch up with you there” he explained.

He laughed a little at the image of him being dragged by Misty. “I’d forgive you. I know you wouldn’t drag me on purpose, Miss Misty. You’re far too nice for that”. And he meant it. She was a nice girl; a little blunt and straightforward, but nice nonetheless.

But now that she mentioned the box on her back and the fact he couldn’t keep up with her, he realised that his suggestion of galloping probably wasn’t that practical. He’d just wanted her to feel how wonderful it was to run freely across the land, the wind swishing through her hair, the nature of her equine side reveling in its freedom as her natural instincts would come to life. He thought it would help her feel more comfortable in her new body, help her ease into her new life a little more if she could feel something good while being a Centaur.

He didn’t say any of these things to Misty. He didn’t know how, without getting flustered and having the words come out wrong. He didn’t protest when she slipped her hand from his grasp, content that she wasn’t going to get spooked or go running off anywhere.

And then he felt a kiss pressed to his cheek. Riven blinked, looking up at Misty with a smile as he listened to her words. “Er…uh…okay, anything you like. Sure, we can take it slowly. Any pace you like! I don’t mind. A-and you don’t have to do that. Unless you want me to”. He waved his hands in the air, dismissing her offer for him to ride on her back as he felt that heat creep up his neck again.

“I would never expect you to have to bribe me to do what you want, Miss Misty but if you really mean it then I can…I mean, that would be nice. So I’ll look forward to it when we return. Not that I’ll get my hopes up or anything! I mean, I don’t want to take advantage of your kind offer and - ” he was off again, babbling away like a right ninny.

They began to pass houses tucked away here and there, along dirt roads in the gentle pasture lands. They could see a simple but wide stone bridge that arched over a deep clean river that ran through the fields, and also farms bearing crops or holding various animals (not always the normal kinds of chickens or other animals, but odd looking creatures as well). Riven had finally calmed down a bit and they travelled in silence for a while.

“The area we are in right now, it’s all owned by the hoofed tribe. Those who prefer not to live in the forest, but out in the more open spaces like this. You can find a lot of equine types out here. There’s plenty of grass and lots of spaces but some people aren’t that comfortable being near the Experiments tribe or the mountains to the West. I think that’s why my parents aren’t living here. I kind of expected them to, since we are…well, a family of sheep people” he admitted, finding it weird to say out loud, even though it was true.

They were nearly to the border of the hoofed tribe’s lands, which would be where they’d meet the guards who would go with them the rest of the way.

**********************************************************************************************************************************************

Peridot squirmed a little at that, and stopped chewing her mouthful of meat, swallowing quickly. She hated the thought of anything crawling on her while she was asleep. What if she swallowed a bug? What if it was a cockroach or a poisonous spider? She shuddered. She didn’t want Eralin to think she was a chicken. She felt silly for worrying about it and for asking in the first place, considering how casually he mentioned it. It was no big deal apparently. You’d get used to it. Peridot wanted to groan. She didn’t know if she could get used to bugs and slimy things.

“Sleep standing up, huh? I don’t think I could do that. Maybe sitting up, with my back against a tree” she mused.

There are bugs all over trees, hiding in their bark. She shuddered again, not hungry any more. She thought about how cold the stream would be, all the things hiding at the bottom that she couldn’t see. Slimy weeds, leeches, worse…! Peridot also had a fear about perverts, or being captured by a monster while bathing, or having to take care of other body functions. She had so many doubts and fears running through her mind while she sat there and she accidentally mumbled one of them out loud “What if a snake bites me on the bottom?”

Her voice was so soft it would have been hard to hear. She sounded truly worried, her brow furrowed while she stared at her remaining piece of meat; a fitting reminder for what snakes probably would think of her if she happened to crouch in their territory.

Realizing that Eralin was speaking to her, she gasped and looked up, hoping she hadn’t said that out loud. “Huh? What? Oh, you want to know about me?” Peri pointed to herself, blushing faintly. She was glad for the distraction he provided, taking her mind off her fears. So she started talking.

“I came to this world a couple of years ago. I was kidnapped and brought here when I was on my way to a friend's house one day. When I was in the compound, I was forced to test things and partake in experiments, just like most people are.” She looked down at her plate, sadly, reflecting on the past.

“I found out that the people there, most of them, like to play with life like it’s their toy box. They made my hair this light blue, my eyes this mauve colour and, well, apart from that, I don’t really know what else they did to me. they never gave me any explanations. I had to drink some sort of weird elixir once, but it seemed not to do anything. I was rescued by some people from the Human/Elf. Seriously, they need to come up with a better name for it”

Peridot noticed she was going off on a tangent, and continued talking about herself, not really sure what he wanted to know.

“Er…the inn keeper of my tribe was kind enough to let me stay in one of their rooms and I soon got a job to help out and support myself. I’m working towards my dream of owning my own house in Purri someday. I thought that since I can never go back to my world, I may as well make the best of things here. So I’m saving up for the future. I want a nice house and I…w…” she trailed off, too embarrassed to tell him her other dreams of yet.

“I don’t know what else I want to do with my life, now that I’m here. I didn’t know which career to pick once I left school, and then I was brought here before I could decide” she frowned. “I have vague ideas but I still don’t know, it’s hard to pick just one”.

She wanted to meet a nice elven guy and be married to them, apart from other things. She believed in true love and she had a heart for romance. But she could be too idealistic, and her dreams were fairly different to reality. Peridot had no clue how to tell something like that to Eralin without it being awkward for both of them.

"I like serving people and taking care of them. Maybe I should open a shop of some kind one day" She wondered.

Eralin just nodded while he listened to Peridot speak. When she was finished, he just wrapped his arms around her, pulling her closer to him and the warmth of the fire as if he could sense some of her grief. "I'm sorry. You must think me a spoiled Elvish prince. I never realized that you have gone through so much." He nuzzled her hair, but stopped when he realized what he was doing. "And don't worry about the snakes biting you. They are more afraid of you than you of them, so they'll stay away from you. Same with bugs. Don't worry about the bugs and things. We're in a pretty secluded place, not many creatures know about it." He threw her a wink. "And the cold streams that I was referencing before, they have crystal clear water where you can see straight through to the bottom, and they feel great." He stretched and contemplated something else. "If you do open a shop, could you make it where you can sell food? I don't know about me, but you make some darn good food."

She yawned, not realizing how sleepy she was until now. The warm meat she had consumed was probably to blame for that. It was hard to stay awake when she felt comfortable and had a full belly. The warmth and crackling of the fire were soothing too. She was going to say something else, but before she could do so, Eralin took her by surprise with a completely unexpected hug. Peridot thought she was going to melt! What was he doing, all of a sudden? What should she do? Was this okay? Well, it wasn't horrible, but, but...oh, right, he was still talking.

"I-I haven't gone through that much. Just what everybody else goes through to wind up here. I got off pretty easy, compared to some" She protested, knowing that she was stiff as board, with her arms still wrapped around her knees. She didn't know what to do. Pushing him away might be rude and she didn't want to hurt his feelings. But returning the hug felt way too familiar. Were all elves usually this intimate with people they had known for only a day? She remained awkwardly stiff and attempted to continue a normal conversation, though her thoughts were becoming scattered.

"No! Well, I'm sure you've been through a lot worse than me. I didn't mean to complain. Sorry, I guess I kind of told you my life story there. It wasn't that bad. I mean, I...mean..." she babbled, losing her train of thought.

When he mentioned that she must think he was spoiled, she shook her head. "I don't think that at all. In fact, I think you're very nice!" Peridot said forcefully, maybe a bit too loudly.

She shifted a bit, wishing she could move back away from the fire as waves of heat from prickly embarrassment burned through her. She felt a nuzzle against her hair, and a small squeak escaped her lips. Peridot closed her eyes, feeling her mind go into overdrive and her heart beat erratically in her chest. Calm down, calm down, calm down... Peridot chanted silently to herself, but rational thought was long lost. She had not a clue how to get out of this. Or in fact, if she wanted to get out of it. He's a friend. I'm being hugged. By an elf. But he's just being friendly. He's a friend. Elves probably do this all the time. But then he said something else that made her blood run cold.

Peridot's eyes popped open and she pushed away from him, with a mortified gasp. "Wait, you heard that?! You...heard...you...ahhhh!"

She was pretty sure she hadn't been in many more humiliating situations than right at this moment. Of course he would have enhanced hearing and she had been talking to herself.

Peridot stood hurriedly and grabbed the plates but then didn't know what to do with them. She had the intention of washing them up but she didn't know where the nearest stream was. So she just stood there like a dummy and listened to him talk about streams and compliment her cooking. "Oh...thank you. Ye...yuh...maybe I will. Open a tea shop or something!" she stammered. "Where I might be..." Great, Peri, now you can't even talk properly. "Stream? Nearest stream?"

Well, this was going fantastic.

Bess gaped, astonished, when Morning shifted back to his more vulnerable human form and handed over the jewel without a fuss. She had expected him to ask questions, maybe even state some terms before handing it over. Then again, he was a laid back sort.

“I understand. Thank you” The firefly woman was as good as her word; as soon as the hard round gem was placed in one of her four hands, she folded her fingers around it and her wings lifted her into the air with a soft hum, breezing air over the three gathered in the cave. The glow emanating from her body intensified as she flew towards the caves’ opening, pushing the curtain of vines aside. She paused and looked back at them as if remembering something. “Oh…by the way, you might want to be careful on the way back to the hoofed tribe. I saw several of the canine tribe wandering around, and lots of prowlers. They’ve been hindering the insect tribe’s searches”. Then she was gone, a glowing wisp flitting into the night.

“Well, that was helpful. I don’t suppose we could tell her it was us that stirred up the Prowlers. Hope she gets that gem safely where it needs to go”. Bess remarked, putting her knife away and stretching. Now that she was awake, she doubted she’d be able to go back to sleep. And after their unexpected visitor, she rather liked the idea of keeping watch. She took a seat by the opening, leaning back against the wall and rubbing her eyes with a sigh.

“You guys can go back to sleep if you want. I’m going to stay up for a while. I’ll watch the entrance, in case anyone else manages to find our hiding place”. Come to think of it, how had Pyridae been able to find this place so easily? It was well hidden and mostly forgotten except for the wildlife that crept in here. Maybe the woman was able to sense the jewel somehow.

“Nothing to do but wait for morning. We should probably head out as soon as Midnight feels up to travelling” She murmured to the others. She busied herself on checking over her supplies, and the bite marks on her leg. As soon as the bears were rested, they could get going. It was getting to be more and more difficult to travel with so many creatures and people roaming the forest. So much for a simple errand to pick up some green powder, this had turned out to be more challenging and time consuming than it ought to.

Still, some good had come out of it, since her friends were reunited.
