So yeah, I actually wanted to start some discussion thread with those innocent beginners philosophy questions, what do you believe in, what do you think of faith, etc. But then today I read this http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/a/-/world/8991590/into-the-future-with-spaceplane/ and i just really was... "suprised" about one thing:

" “You can imagine a situation when some of our industrially important but polluting processes are done in space and the finished products are brought back down to Earth.” "

Did they really just actually say that? And here i thought people were trying to, or at least generally, become more 'green'. Using space as a free dumping ground for pollution? Is it just me, or is this person's mind set on dumping pollution anywhere just messed up?

well, I dunno... to be honest, I think it would be alot less harmful than dumping everything in our oceans or burying it in the ground. Planet Earth would become sickened, but in the vastness of Space, garbage is just another random clump of Elements and Matter, albeit one of the stinker and more toxic collections.

Thinking philosophically...

...and asking aloud what I have previously only pondered within the confines of mine own mind...

What if we are inadvertently causing another problem by sending so much of Earth's total mass into space? ...What if we are altering a previous constant enough that later in the future we find we have done irreversible damage to our own orbit or some s**t?...

I mean really, we still don't understand much about gravity. Basically we know that there is a force that makes things fall, and gives planets a pretty constant rotation... we know just about enough to name it... and now we go altering mass which is really one of the main factors that determine the little bit about gravity we can predict...

There are tons and tons of our stuff in space already. Enough that several companies and governments are considering a recovery effort so we can recycle the metals back here on the ground. The stuff that is up there has actually become a major concern for future moon missions... if you see a pic of our Earth above the orbital layer, you pretty much can't see Earth for all of the satellites. Example

...but yeah... I think humanity needs to stop looking for shortcuts. I think that if a process is so dangerous, or if it makes that much waste, that there should be renewed efforts to discover new and safer ways of doing it.

confused not saying we're very intelligent as a species, here, but... we do actually know more about Gravity than that... we know, for example, that Gravity is dependent on the Mass of objects, and that Massive objects have a greater pull. but also that bigger and smaller objects are both tugging and pulling on eachother simultaneously.

we are able to estimate how far away the Earth is from other objects, and calculate the aproximate time it takes for any given object to travel from one planet to the next.

and furthermore, I don't think of this as a shortcut... I think of it as an alternative to even more damaging options closer to home.

of course, I'm still calling for Waste-Fuel Technology... ninja that's the future, I'm telling ya! it would require a reform of how we manage Tree Farms in order to properly and safely function, of course... but the plan I have is surely alot better than landfills.

now, if I could just convince enough key people to put in the funding and back up the policy....

Well first of, WHO will have the right to go dump their stuff on the moon, or any other planet? will it be bidded by auction, richest get to claim to throw their own luggage onto? I thought the moon was a sort of no man's land. Another thing is, the moon's gravity isn't that strong, not strong enough to hold an atmospher or something like that. Whatever pollution they put there has the possibility of floating away. We've only have experiance on pollution's affect on earth, how will chemicals and other waste be affected in space?

The other thing is, these people are all going out again with the whole, 'random piece of land/planet? MINE!' either way, they're throwing out their trash in a sort of 'out of sight out of mind' idea', but just because it's out there on some other planets doesn't mean it won't affect us. It might. Either way, it just grinds against me, dunno. Just feels like a selfish thing to say.

I consider those facts part and parcel... I was being a bit dramatic... but the fact is, gravity is still one of humanities largest mysteries at this point. We know just enough about it to make us realize that we haven't even scratched the surface.

I think that as a whole we are lazy. It's easier to just ship our crap off than to try and find new and cleaner way of doing things. I just think that we should have learned by now that our actions now always end up affecting our future in unexpected ways, and we need to be more thoughtful.
